Tadej Pogačar enters the 2026 Tour of Flanders as the man to beat. The world champion and UAE Emirates-XRG rider has demonstrated his ability to dominate this demanding Monument through relentless pressure on the climbs. Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Premier Tech remains a formidable opponent, though he acknowledged before departing for Spain that facing Pogačar will prove challenging. Wout van Aert from Visma | Lease a Bike showed promising form at In Flanders Fields and rounds out the trio of contenders.
Recent Victories Paint a Two-Man Battle
The recent Tour of Flanders results tell a story of dominance by Pogačar and Van der Poel. In 2025, Pogačar prevailed on the Oude Kwaremont, with Mads Pedersen taking second and Van Aert finishing fourth. The year before, Van der Poel claimed victory in Pogačar’s absence. Their head-to-head record shows Pogačar winning in 2023 and Van der Poel securing triumphs in 2022, 2020, with Kasper Asgreen breaking their streak in 2021.

Route Structure Defines the Race
The 2026 edition starts in Antwerp and covers 278 kilometres to Oudenaarde. The opening 130 kilometres present minimal climbing, allowing early breakaway attempts. The race intensifies after the 140-kilometre mark with the first ascent of the Oude Kwaremont, which riders must climb three times total.
Between the 140 and 200-kilometre marks, the Kortekeer, Wolvenberg, Molenberg, Marlboroughstraat, Berendries and Valkenberg follow in succession. Beyond 200 kilometres, Berg Ten Houte and the Hotond introduce another climbing sequence.

The decisive phase occurs roughly 50 kilometres from the finish, where the second passage of the Oude Kwaremont and first ascent of the Paterberg separate contenders. The Koppenberg follows immediately after on its steep cobbled slope. Within ten kilometres come Steenbeekdries and Taaienberg, leading to the Kruisberg and the final two climbs: the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg for the third and second time respectively. The final 13 kilometres to Oudenaarde offer little respite.

Weather and Conditions
Rain remains possible with temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius. Northeast winds will provide a tailwind in the finale but headwind during the morning run from Antwerp toward the Flemish Ardennes. The race starts at 10:00 AM local time and should conclude around 4:45 PM.
