Aston Villa are closing in on a £49 million deal for SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, cutting ahead of Newcastle United who had already reached a verbal agreement with the player and his club.
According to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, Newcastle had been the frontrunner for Manzambi’s signature throughout the window, targeting the 20-year-old Swiss international to reinforce their midfield. A verbal agreement worth £49 million was reached, yet the transfer stalled. Manzambi pushed for a move to Villa Park instead, and Villa matched Newcastle’s fee to seal the switch.
The Rise of Johan Manzambi
Manzambi developed through Swiss and German youth systems before breaking into Freiburg’s senior setup. His 2025/26 campaign was a statement season: seven goals and nine assists across 47 appearances in all competitions. That output earned him a place in Switzerland’s World Cup squad, where he was among the standout young players as the Nati reached the quarter-finals before falling to Argentina.
A Premier League move was the logical next step.
Why Newcastle Lost Out
Newcastle’s pursuit of Manzambi was driven by pressing need. The Magpies sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, and Bruno Guimaraes is pushing to join Arsenal, leaving a significant gap in their midfield. Despite moving quickly and securing a verbal agreement, they could not prevent Villa’s intervention. Reports had flagged the risk of a hijack, and those concerns proved well-founded.
Per The Athletic, Villa’s place in the UEFA Champions League proved the decisive factor. Manzambi opted for European football over Newcastle’s offer.
