Manchester United Activate £35m Release Clause to Sign Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans

13.07.2026, 07:04

Manchester United have activated a £35 million release clause to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, according to talkSPORT. The 29-year-old Belgian international has two years remaining on his Villa contract, but the club’s efforts to retain him were unsuccessful after Tielemans opted to weigh his options.

Tielemans is expected to fill the midfield void created by Casemiro’s departure, with the Brazilian set to join Inter Miami following his exit from Old Trafford. United are also closing in on a separate £50 million deal to bring in Andrey Santos from Chelsea, signalling a significant midfield overhaul at the club.

Tielemans brings considerable Premier League pedigree to the move, with 244 appearances across spells at Leicester City and Villa. He was named Villa’s 2024/25 Player of the Season and was a key figure in their Europa League title win last season.

On the international stage, Tielemans captained Belgium at the World Cup, earning 90 caps in total. He featured in every match during their run to the quarter-finals and scored twice in the comeback victory over Senegal. He missed the 2-1 quarter-final loss to Spain after picking up an apparent hamstring injury in the warm-up.

Ederson Deal Stalls

United have also agreed a £38.8 million fee with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson, but the transfer is currently on hold. Atalanta’s side wanted to sell this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2027, and the player had agreed a four-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. Medical checks remain a sticking point, with clarity on the situation expected shortly.

Goalkeeping Cover Secured

United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds United on a three-year deal with an option for a fourth year. Darlow is set to serve as backup to Senne Lammens and replaces Altay Bayindir, satisfying the club’s requirement for a homegrown keeper on the roster. Tielemans remains the headline addition of the window so far. Follow TipsGG for the latest updates as United’s summer business continues.
