Juan Ayuso’s pursuit of the maglia rosa ended in a surreal and painful twist—an allergic reaction to a bee sting during Stage 18 of the Giro d’Italia 2025.
The 21-year-old UAE Emirates-XRG rider turned up at the start in Cesano Maderno with his right eye severely swollen. The culprit? A rogue bee that stung him after getting lodged inside his helmet during Wednesday’s punishing mountain leg.
Despite the visible discomfort, Ayuso displayed grit, taking to the start line in a desperate attempt to continue. But just an hour into the stage—and trailing at the back of the peloton—he made the difficult decision to abandon with 110km remaining.
A Campaign Derailed by Misfortune
Ayuso began the Giro as a co-leader with high hopes of challenging for overall victory. However, his campaign quickly deteriorated. An early crash left him needing stitches in his knee, and successive mountain stages saw him hemorrhage precious time.
Tuesday’s grueling alpine test saw him concede nearly 15 minutes. By Wednesday, he was battling just to finish, dragging himself over the legendary Mortirolo climb more than 35 minutes behind the leaders, riding alongside sprinters and domestiques.
“I’ve never been in a gruppetto. It’s really hard to take,” Ayuso said post-stage. “You imagine being up front, challenging for pink. Yesterday, it was just pure misery.”

“I Can’t See Out My Right Eye”
In his pre-Stage 18 interview, Ayuso showed the extent of the swelling: “Yesterday, a bee went inside my helmet and I can’t see out my right eye. I know this is going to go viral, but it is what it is.”
Although advised by the team doctor not to start, Ayuso’s commitment to his teammates pushed him to try. “I’m not really convinced I can do it, but I just want to see if I can safely be in the bunch,” he said before rolling out.
That effort lasted only an hour before the inevitable call came—his Giro was over.

Silver Lining for UAE Emirates
While Ayuso’s Giro ends in disappointment, UAE Emirates have reason to stay optimistic. Rising star Isaac del Toro has stepped into the spotlight, currently donning the leader’s pink jersey with just four stages remaining.
For Ayuso, the sting—both literal and emotional—brings an early end to a campaign filled with what-ifs. But in the ever-unpredictable world of Grand Tours, resilience and redemption are always just one race away.
