Red Bull Hesitant to Confirm Verstappen Grid Penalty Despite Baku Scare

Red Bull is holding off on any decision about a potential grid penalty for Max Verstappen, waiting on technical analysis before committing to a course of action for the remainder of the season.

The four-time champion suffered a surprise engine issue during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, a fault that derailed his shot at a strong starting position. Verstappen recovered to finish second at the Baku City Circuit, but his own read on the situation was blunt: a grid penalty is coming at some point this season.

Red Bull avoided an immediate penalty by shuffling components within the power unit pool already allocated to Verstappen ahead of the race. Whether a penalty becomes necessary later, and when, remains an open question.

Team principal Laurent Mekies stopped short of endorsing Verstappen’s prediction, choosing instead to wait for a full breakdown of the qualifying issues before making any commitment.

“It is not clear yet. It will very much depend on our analysis of the issues we had with his engine in qualifying, which we had to take off the car, and whether or not we can use that engine again. Based on that, we will see if we can make it to the end with his fourth engine.”

Mekies Praises Verstappen’s Pace Before the Fault

Several paths remain open for Red Bull. No penalty may be required at all if the existing pool components hold up through the rest of the calendar.

If a penalty does become unavoidable, as Verstappen expects, the Milton Keynes squad has two options. It can wait until the penalty becomes mandatory, or select a strategic moment to take the hit early. Mercedes went with the proactive route for Kimi Antonelli at Monza this year.

Mekies broke down what went wrong with the power unit during Baku qualifying:

“We had two different issues with the power unit, and it cost us a lot, but that’s what it is. That’s part of the game. In fairness, Max was very, very strong from Friday onwards, and probably would have been fighting for that first row without the issues we had with the PU. Of course, fixing that with the new engine allowed us to get back to the competitive level that we were hoping to have.”

The situation leaves Red Bull walking a fine line between reliability and performance for the remainder of the campaign. Verstappen’s title challenge hinges partly on how the team manages this power unit puzzle in the closing rounds.
