Lucas Bergvall’s reduced playing time at Tottenham Hotspur has drawn fresh interest from across Europe, yet the club shows no intention of letting the midfielder walk away during a formative stage of his career.
TEAMtalk reports that Barcelona rank among several clubs tracking the 20-year-old Sweden international, with Napoli and Juventus also monitoring his situation closely. Tottenham remain unwilling to sanction a sale, a stance reinforced by Bergvall’s recent commitment to a new contract running through 2031.
The midfielder has found starts hard to come by under Roberto De Zerbi this season. Summer signings Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have added depth to the midfield, squeezing Bergvall’s opportunities and raising natural questions about his short-term role. Tottenham’s response has not been to explore a sale but to look internally at ways of expanding his involvement.
Barcelona interest returns as competition grows
Barcelona’s admiration for Bergvall predates his Tottenham move. The club scouted him extensively during his spell at Djurgarden in 2024, only to lose out when Spurs completed the signing. That interest has resurfaced, driven by his technical range, athletic profile and positional flexibility, traits Barcelona believe could slot into their midfield setup.
Competition at Camp Nou remains steep, with Pedri, Gavi and Marc Bernal already established. Bergvall’s versatility could still open a path given the uncertainty surrounding Dani Olmo’s situation. Napoli are weighing a future midfield rebuild and see Bergvall as a potential option, while Juventus have moved with more urgency.
The Turin club are exploring a loan through the end of the season, with injuries leaving their midfield short on numbers. A temporary move would give Bergvall the consistent football he has struggled to secure in North London, though Tottenham have shown little appetite for entertaining such an arrangement.
Spurs should resist the temptation
Bergvall’s case highlights why playing time alone should not dictate a young player’s trajectory. He needs minutes at 20, but Tottenham must also weigh what it means to lose him just as his physical and tactical development approaches maturity. His ability to receive the ball under pressure, carry it through midfield and thread vertical passes marks him out as far more than squad cover.
Interest from Barcelona flatters him, but a move there offers no guarantee of regular football given the midfield talent already in place. Juventus could provide game time on loan, yet that option only makes sense if Tottenham genuinely believe a temporary switch would accelerate his progress rather than stall it.
The more sensible route runs through Tottenham’s own squad. Spurs should build his responsibility gradually instead of treating him as a player stuck waiting for a chance. They have already persuaded him to sign until 2031. The next task is convincing Bergvall that patience at Tottenham will pay off.
