South Limburg is gearing up for the Amstel Gold Race 2026, the crown jewel of Dutch cycling. The famous hills await, and the startlist promises fireworks even without some of the sport’s biggest names. Here’s everything you need to know before Sunday’s race.
This race has delivered some unforgettable moments over the past decade. Mathieu van der Poel produced one of cycling’s all-time great comebacks in 2019. Both 2021 and 2022 came down to photo finishes impossible to separate with the naked eye. Wout van Aert and Michał Kwiatkowski ended up on the right side of those calls; Tom Pidcock and Benoît Cosnefroy weren’t so fortunate. Pidcock got his redemption in 2024, Tadej Pogačar obliterated the field in 2023, and then both he and Remco Evenepoel were beaten by the surprising Mattias Skjelmose in 2025.

Course, Weather and Schedule for the 2026 Amstel Gold Race
The Cauberg hasn’t hosted the finish since 2013, but make no mistake, it still shapes the outcome of this race. The finish line sits two kilometres past the summit, in the same spot where the 2012 World Championships concluded. Last year’s three-up sprint in Berg en Terblijt validated the decision to move the finish there.

Riders leave the Markt in Maastricht and loop towards Sittard and Geleen in the opening kilometres. The route winds through Ubachsberg, Simpelveld and Nijswiller before turning back towards the Heuvelland. Iconic climbs like the Loorberg and Camerig come before the literal high point at the Drielandenpunt (Three Countries Point) in Vaals.

Then the real action starts. Climbs stack up relentlessly: the Eyserbosweg, the Keutenberg, and the mythical Cauberg. The Geulhemmerberg and Bemelerberg are tackled for the final time roughly 25 kilometres from the line. The Cauberg appears once more via narrow roads in the closing circuit before the race reaches its conclusion in Berg en Terblijt. Men tackle the Cauberg three times in total, with two kilometres of racing still remaining after the last ascent. All the ingredients for a proper Dutch cycling festival.
Weather Forecast
Sunday in South Limburg should bring light winds with some rain possible during the afternoon. Temperatures are expected to hover just below 20°C.

Men’s Favorites for the 2026 Amstel Gold Race
World champion Tadej Pogačar is skipping the gap between Paris-Roubaix and Liège-Bastogne-Liège this year. His UAE teammate Isaac del Toro is also likely missing after suffering a muscle tear at the Tour of the Basque Country, and question marks remain over the fitness of Jan Christen, Tim Wellens and Jhonatan Narváez.

Wout van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) have both opted to skip Amstel after Paris-Roubaix. Other crowd favorites like Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM, targeting only Flèche Wallonne and Liège) and Tom Pidcock (nursing a knee injury from a crash in Catalonia) are expected to be absent as well. The odds reflect this unusual field.
The first and third-place finishers from 2025 are here, though. Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) enters with real confidence following his third place at the Tour of Flanders. He finished third last year on his Amstel debut. We think he’s the man to beat on Sunday, honestly.
Lidl-Trek bring defending champion Mattias Skjelmose with a solid supporting cast. Juan Ayuso isn’t expected to be available, but Quinn Simmons, Andrea Bagioli, Albert Withen Philipsen and Bauke Mollema offer a nice blend of power, youth and experience around him.
INEOS Grenadiers look formidable too. The British squad fields three strong Frenchmen who’ve been visible at the front all season. Kévin Vauquelin leans more towards the climbing type, while Dorian Godon and Axel Laurance have the punch to contest a sprint finish. If you’re learning how to bet on sports, races like this with multiple contenders from one team create interesting opportunities.
Visma | Lease a Bike identified Matteo Jorgenson, Louis Barré (last year’s surprise package) and Ben Tulett as their key men heading into these races. Jorgenson has built up well on Tenerife, but the other two have battled illness and crashes. Their form is uncertain.
No such doubts surround Mauro Schmid (Jayco AlUla). The Swiss champion has been deeply impressive in 2026, finishing second at the NXT Classic in South Limburg last week behind Tibor Del Grosso. He’ll miss Michael Matthews but has Andrea Vendrame alongside him. Del Grosso, riding for Alpecin-Premier Tech, will also start Sunday.
Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) is among the most talented riders in the peloton, something he underlined with seventh place last year. Compatriot Paul Lapeira (Decathlon CMA CGM) belongs in the same outsider bracket. In a race like the Amstel Gold Race, there are always a few names that emerge from the pack. Maybe Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) hasn’t sparkled yet in 2026, but alongside Harry Sweeny and Alex Baudin he brings a capable unit. Keep an eye on Alex Aranburu (Cofidis), Brandon McNulty (UAE), Pello Bilbao, Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain Victorious), Jenno Berckmoes (Lotto-Intermarché), Simone Velasco, Christian Scaroni (XDS-Astana), Andreas Kron (Uno-X), Rick Pluimers, Julian Alaphilippe and Marc Hirschi (Tudor) as potential podium threats.
