Domestiques Shape Paris-Roubaix Strategy: How Teams Prepare Support Riders for the Classic
GP de Denain serves as the testing ground for Paris-Roubaix, offering teams a critical opportunity to evaluate domestiques and equipment before cycling’s most demanding one-day race. The March semi-classic features 22.9 kilometres of cobbles in its final 100 kilometres, mirroring the terrain and tactical demands that await in April.

Teams Test Equipment and Personnel at Denain
UAE Emirates-XRG skipped GP de Denain altogether. Tadej Pogačar and Florian Vermeersch instead reconnoitered sections of the Paris-Roubaix route in northern France. Other squads attended the race to sharpen tactical execution and assess domestique readiness.
Nils Politt, a domestique for Pogačar at UAE Emirates-XRG, emphasized the importance of equipment validation. “We were here in December, when we tested new equipment. Last year after Paris-Roubaix we received two new bikes, so now we have to make choices,” Politt explained before the GP de Denain start. Testing occurs across multiple venues: December trials, January evaluations, and final pre-race reconnaissance.
Visma | Lease a Bike brought a squad targeting Roubaix victory. Per Strand Hagenes, who will support Wout van Aert, highlighted the race’s value. “We get some beautiful sectors in the final part of the race, so it is a good test and a great race. The setup is very good, we have full confidence in it, including the pump system from Gravaa.”
Hagenes flew over Denain‘s cobbles, finishing only moments before being caught. Team director Robert Wagner praised the results. “We use this as a final equipment test, but of course everything has already been tested. Training and races are different, however, so we are very pleased that we only had one puncture.” Mechanical reliability separates successful domestiques from those who abandon.

Decathlon CMA CGM Refines Setup for Roubaix Victory
Decathlon CMA CGM planned to send cobble specialists Daan Hoole and Cees Bol to Denain. A broken finger suffered by Hoole at Paris-Nice left Bol as the sole team representative.
“The team is very busy with testing — for bike supplier Van Rysel, Roubaix is really an important race,” Bol stated. Equipment development spans months. “In January we tested the equipment and the day before Denain we reconnoitred. The GP de Denain is also part of the fine-tuning programme towards Roubaix, if you can call it that.”
Bol described the bike setup as “superb” and revealed tactical adjustments. “For Roubaix there aren’t that many secrets, but I am now riding on wider tyres, to minimise the chance of impact punctures. We are working well on it.”
Success at Paris-Roubaix hinges on domestique selection, mechanical precision, and tactical execution. The semi-classics serve as laboratories where teams validate every variable before the cobbled monuments demand absolute perfection.
