What Is BetStop? How Australia's National Self-Exclusion Register Works

Most gambling tools are built to keep you in the market. BetStop was built to get you out of it. How Does BetStop Work?

You register once. Your details go on the register. Every licensed wagering provider in Australia then checks customer details against that register and acts accordingly.

The mechanism is quiet and administrative, which is the point. Nobody rings your employer. Providers are told only whether a person is self-excluded, not the rest of your file.

What providers must do once you register

• Refuse to let you place a bet
• Refuse to let you open a new betting account
• Stop sending you marketing messages, emails and SMS included
• Close any existing accounts you hold and refund your credit balance

You cannot pick and choose. Self-exclusion applies across the board: every licensed operator, all at once. This is the structural difference between BetStop and the old approach, where you excluded yourself from one bookmaker and the app store cheerfully offered you eleven more.

What BetStop does not cover

BetStop applies to licensed online and phone wagering. It does not apply to online casino games or to services provided illegally in Australia, because those operators sit outside the licensing regime and answer to nobody here. How to Register for BetStop

Registration takes about five minutes at betstop.gov.au. It is free, and your personal details are protected under strict disclosure rules.

1. Have a mobile phone number and an email address ready.
2. Have an identity document handy: an Australian driver’s licence, a Medicare card or a passport.
3. Go to the BetStop register page and complete the sign-up form.
4. Choose your self-exclusion period, from three months up to a lifetime.
5. Nominate a support person if you want one (optional).
6. Confirm. Your exclusion begins, and licensed providers start closing accounts.

You can sign in to your BetStop login later to extend your period, update contact details or add a support person. What you cannot do is register somebody else. The Support Person Option

You can nominate someone you trust to be notified about key events in your exclusion. Thousands of Australians have done it. A support person does not control your account or make decisions for you; they are told when things change, including if you apply to be removed from the register.

Ending Your Self-Exclusion Takes Real Effort

This is the part that surprises people. You cannot apply for removal during the first three months, full stop.

After that, an application to come off the register must include a statutory declaration confirming you have received counselling or advice about your decision from a qualified counsellor, psychologist or doctor. Any nominated support people are notified when the application is lodged. If the application stands and is not withdrawn, removal happens seven days after it is received.

Seven days of cooling off, a professional conversation and a legal document. Compare that with the thirty seconds it takes to open a betting account, and the asymmetry looks intentional.

Worth knowing: once your accounts are closed, they stay closed. Returning to wagering after removal means opening new accounts from scratch.

The age skew is the statistic that lands hardest. Around 45 per cent of everyone who has ever self-excluded through the register was thirty or younger when they did it, with roughly another third aged 31 to 40. Mandatory pre-verification of customer identity, introduced alongside the register, exists partly to make sure those exclusions actually hold when someone tries to open a fresh account.

Outcomes look encouraging too. ACMA-commissioned research by ORIMA found that 77 per cent of registrants reported a better overall quality of life, 79 per cent reported improved mental health, and 96 per cent had either stopped betting on sport and racing entirely (81 per cent) or cut back (15 per cent).

BetStop, GamStop and State Schemes

Australians often search for GamStop, which is the United Kingdom equivalent and has no jurisdiction here. BetStop is the Australian register; GamStop covers Great Britain licensed operators.

Registers also do not talk to each other domestically. If you are already self-excluded with a single provider or through a state or territory program, you still need to register with BetStop separately. It does not replace those schemes, cannot integrate with them, and does not remove an operator’s own obligation to offer self-exclusion.
