With five Grand Tour titles under his belt, Primoz Roglic isn’t chasing volume anymore—he’s chasing legacy. And in 2025, that means putting all chips on the Tour de France.
Slovenia’s cycling icon will pursue the rare and ambitious Giro d’Italia – Tour de France double this season, opting out of his most statistically favorable race, the Vuelta a España. According to his coach, Marc Lamberts of Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe, Roglic’s decision stems from a drive to conquer the only Grand Tour missing from his palmares.
“The Tour Is Still the Main Goal”
Speaking to Wielerflits, Lamberts offered rare insight into Roglic’s mindset: “In his own mind, the Tour de France is still the main goal. It’s the only race he hasn’t won yet.”
Despite internal debate, Roglic made the call himself. “The team supported doing the Giro. Primoz made the final decision. We talked a lot, but to be honest, I wasn’t in favour,” Lamberts admitted.
The Vuelta: Roglic’s Comfort Zone
Lamberts highlighted Roglic’s historic comfort at the Vuelta: four wins, peak power output, and course profiles tailored to his strengths. “The climbs are shorter and steeper—20 to 30 minutes. They suit him far better than the hour-long climbs in the Giro or Tour.”
Still, for Roglic, adding a fifth Vuelta crown isn’t the priority. “He’s not chasing records,” said Lamberts. “He wants to win races, but that pressure he used to feel—it’s not there anymore.”
A Giro With Less Pressure, But High Stakes
Heading into the 2025 Giro, Roglic is calm but focused. “He doesn’t need to win again to prove anything, but he’s still giving it his all. The final week—with two time trials and a gravel stage—will be decisive.”
- Form: Close to his 2024 Vuelta levels
- Challenges: Less suited terrain, gravel uncertainties
- Goal: Podium finish with an outside shot at victory
“If the weather plays along and he avoids issues on the gravel stage, he can win. But everything has to align.”
The ultimate goal? Still the yellow jersey. But Lamberts acknowledges the challenge: “Pogacar and Vingegaard are a level above. Remco Evenepoel is another big name. Realistically, Primoz is battling for third.”
Yet in a sport where form, crashes, and surprise tactics shape outcomes, Roglic’s experience and tactical acumen mean one thing: never count him out.
Roglic’s 2025 campaign isn’t about padding stats. It’s about legacy. In a career already lined with triumphs, only one peak remains unconquered. As he chases the maillot jaune, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely—because when Primoz Roglic lines up at the start, the road ahead is never predictable, but always compelling.
