Manchester United are plotting a summer sale of Bruno Fernandes after the club captain criticised Michael Carrick’s tactical approach in public, according to reports. The move comes amid a wretched run that has left Old Trafford simmering with discontent.
Como Mauling Deepens Carrick Crisis
United were torn apart 4-1 by Como in midweek, a result that piled pressure on Carrick before a chastening home defeat to Bournemouth extended Manchester United‘s winless run in all competitions to seven matches. The club hierarchy has reportedly begun sounding out potential replacements for Carrick as patience wears thin.
Fernandes’ Post-Match Remarks Spark Backlash
Fernandes did his manager no favours in the aftermath of the Como defeat, publicly questioning the coaching staff’s defensive setup.
“It was a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind.”
The remarks drew sharp criticism from pundits and former players. Frank Leboeuf was among the most vocal, branding the comments a betrayal of Carrick.
Benched Against Bournemouth, Fernandes Fuels Speculation
Carrick responded by dropping Fernandes for the visit of Bournemouth, leaving his captain on the bench throughout the defeat. Fernandes added fuel to the fire by liking an Instagram post titled “Never Push A Loyal Person To The Point Where They No Longer Care,” a gesture widely read as a dig at the club.
United Weigh Summer Exit for Captain
Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke reports that United now plan to let Fernandes go in the summer following his outburst over Carrick’s tactics. The club are reportedly assessing a sale at the end of the season despite the midfielder entering the final year of his contract.
United’s board are said to be weighing the option of cashing in on Fernandes to preserve his market value, rather than opening talks over a long-term renewal.

Replacing Fernandes Carries a Nine-Figure Price Tag
Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson believes United will need at least £100million to replace Fernandes’ output in the current market.
“He’s going to be 33 soon. So whatever happens, the Bruno Fernandes era is coming to an end as being a dominant, key player. And he’s going to have to be replaced. And it’s very unlikely that United are going to be able to find a player of his quality for less than £100million. Each time it just keeps coming back to money and the investment that’s going to be required.”
