Lando Norris claimed pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix at the newly built Madring circuit, edging out Kimi Antonelli by a razor-thin 0.011 seconds. The McLaren driver found a late surge of pace on his final lap, flipping the order at the last possible moment and denying Antonelli what looked set to be a maiden pole.
Norris Extends His Pole Streak
This marks the third time in the last four rounds that Norris has topped qualifying. It also makes him the first driver to claim pole at the Madring Circuit, a distinction that adds weight to an already strong recent run of form. The reigning champion has looked sharp under pressure all weekend, and Saturday’s session confirmed that his single-lap pace remains a genuine threat heading into Sunday’s race.
Antonelli, despite missing out on the top spot, produced a lap strong enough to keep the gap under two hundredths of a second. For a driver still building experience at the sharp end of the grid, the result signals real progress.
Verstappen Muscles Into The Fight
Max Verstappen made a late charge to insert himself into contention for pole, but the champion could only manage third on the timesheet. It was still a solid response after a session that looked tighter than usual through the middle sectors, and it keeps him within striking distance of the front two heading into race day.
Hamilton Gets The Better Of Leclerc
Fourth place went to Lewis Hamilton, who edged out team-mate Charles Leclerc to take the position. The margin between the pair was small, but it gives Hamilton the intra-team edge heading into Sunday.
George Russell endured another tough session, setting only the sixth-fastest time and continuing a difficult stretch for the Mercedes driver. The team will need answers quickly if that trend continues into the coming rounds.
