LeBron James Makes Historic 23rd Season Debut

19.11.2025, 09:04

After nearly seven months away from NBA action,  LeBron James stepped back onto the court Tuesday night looking nothing like a player who had missed 14 games — and everything like a superstar adding yet another chapter to a legendary career. Entering an unprecedented 23rd NBA season, James delivered a polished, high-IQ performance that powered the Los Angeles Lakers to a commanding 140-126 win over the Utah Jazz.

A Seamless Return for the King

James admitted his lungs were “burning” early on, but his playmaking instincts clicked instantly. The 40-year-old finished with 11 points, 12 assists, and three rebounds in 29 minutes, dictating the Lakers’ pace and rhythm with the kind of command only he possesses.

“The pace tested me… but I was happy with the way I was able to go with the guys,” James said postgame. “Caught my second wind, caught my third wind. Rhythm is still coming back… everything tonight was expected.”

Expected — because LeBron’s mastery is routine by now. Even injuries, including a difficult battle with sciatica that sidelined him since training camp, haven’t dulled his unparalleled feel for the game.

Fitting Into a 10-4 Team? No Problem.

Some wondered whether the Lakers’ strong start without him would complicate his re-entry. James laughed off the idea.

“I can fit in with anybody,” he said. “Just watching the first 14 games, I was mentally putting myself in those positions… I’m still able to gain a lot of eyes when I’m driving the ball.”

Safe to say he proved it. Despite not scoring for his first 11 minutes, James settled in with back-to-back triples in the second quarter and then orchestrated a passing clinic — tallying six assists in just over three minutes early in the fourth.

Redick’s Verdict: Unselfish, Efficient, Elite

Lakers coach JJ Redick couldn’t hide his appreciation for LeBron’s approach.

“Very unselfish all night… he made great decisions,” Redick said. “It’s great to have him back.”

Teammate Deandre Ayton was equally impressed, especially after catching an alley-oop from James — a moment that brought him back to his eighth-grade days at LeBron’s basketball camp. “He played with the right spirit,” Ayton said.

A Season of Records — and More to Come

This debut wasn’t just another night. It marked LeBron as the first player in NBA history to reach 23 seasons, surpassing Vince Carter’s 22.

He now sits just 48 games shy of Robert Parish’s all-time record for most regular-season games played (1,611). He already holds the league record for total minutes and combined regular-season + playoff appearances.

For a player who has already become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, surpassed 50,000 combined career points, and logged 21 All-Star selections, the milestones keep stacking up.

What’s Next for LeBron and the Lakers?

James refuses to name a retirement date. His focus is rebuilding his conditioning and integrating deeper into Redick’s system over the team’s upcoming practices.

“I don’t have to worry about chemistry,” he said. “Everyone enjoys playing for one another. I just need to get my wind and rhythm back.”

Los Angeles won the Pacific Division last season and added Luka Dončić — James’ self-proclaimed favorite current player — near midseason. Their next test comes Sunday in Salt Lake City, again against the Jazz.

With LeBron officially back and already orchestrating games at a high level, the Lakers’ ceiling rises immediately. Whether this is the start of one final surge or simply another stop in his evolving journey, James continues to redefine longevity — and dominance — in ways the league has never seen.
