Kyle Walker has confirmed his retirement from international football, ending a 14 year tenure with England. The Burnley defender earned 96 caps during a career that saw him transform into a foundational piece of the national team defense.
His journey began against Spain in 2011. While injuries forced him to miss EURO 2012 and the 2014 World Cup, he became a fixture in the lineup for the next five major tournaments. Walker was central to the squads that reached the EURO 2020 and EURO 2024 finals, as well as the 2018 World Cup semi-final in Russia.
“I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England. To represent my country at five major tournaments, to get to the finals that we’ve reached and to be surrounded by this England team has been a great honour. But today is the time that comes to an end.”
His final appearance for the Three Lions occurred during a summer friendly against Senegal last year. Thomas Tuchel omitted the veteran from the squad during the final three international windows of 2025, yet the manager was quick to acknowledge the defender’s legacy.
“I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career. Although I only worked with him for a short period of time, I was always aware that he was one of England’s greats who fully embraced the highest honour of representing his country.”
Walker departs the international stage as one of the most decorated modern defenders in the country’s history. His longevity across 14 years and consistent presence in deep tournament runs cement his status among the England elite.
