Giro d'Italia 2025 Stage 11 Odds & Preview

21.05.2025, 02:34

A storm is brewing in the mountains, and it’s wearing pink. Stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia 2025 promises drama, daring moves, and the potential for GC fireworks. On Wednesday, the peloton faces a daunting 186km trek from the festive coast of Viareggio to the shadowy slopes of Castelnovo ne’ Monti, laced with 3,850 metres of elevation gain and one almighty monster: the Alpe San Pellegrino.

The Stage: Brutality from the Start

stage 11 official route map

Forget a warm-up. As soon as the riders leave Viareggio, the road begins to bite. Within kilometres, they head inland and upwards into the Apennines. The centrepiece? Alpe San Pellegrino — the steepest, most savage climb faced so far in this year’s Giro. It last featured 25 years ago, and that day reshaped the GC as Francesco Casagrande annihilated the field en route to pink.

This year, the stats are terrifying. The climb punches into double-digit gradients after just 1km, holds 9% for 8km, and then, after a teasing descent, returns with a vengeance: 3km at over 12%, a nasty ramp of 20%, and a brief let-up to the summit. And yet—and this is crucial—the summit comes 92km from the finish.

Yes, the climb is early. That’s been a theme of this Giro: front-loading the pain, daring the GC hopefuls to act. Do you risk it all on a 90km solo? Or do you play it safe and wait for the final ramps?

Tactics: All or Nothing?

If history is a guide, boldness pays. Casagrande made his winning move 30km from the line back in 1999. But today’s riders will have to commit even earlier. The descent off San Pellegrino is long and not especially steep—a nightmare for any rider trying to hold off a chasing group.

After San Pellegrino, the day keeps hurting: the 11.1km climb to Toano at 4.9% will sting already tired legs, and the punchy Pietra di Bismantova arrives just before the finish, averaging 5.8% for 5.8km. The gradients don’t look savage on paper, but after the brutality of the earlier climb, expect carnage. This is where GC gaps will form — perhaps decisive ones.

The Contenders: Breakaway Specialists vs Opportunistic Climbers

The start is flat, which means pure climbers will need help to get in the break. Conversely, the gradients of Alpe San Pellegrino will eliminate most heavy rouleurs. To win from the front, a rider will need legs, brains, and a little luck.

Luke Plapp (Jayco Alula) fits the bill. He already has a breakaway win at this Giro and thrives on terrain like this. Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) is another strong candidate, having quietly worked for teammates thus far. If he gets up the road, watch out.

Marco Frigo (Israel-Premier Tech) could be biding his time for the Alps, but if he chooses today, he’ll be dangerous. Meanwhile, Pello Bilbao, Wout Poels, Davide Formolo, and Stefano Oldani all have the class to strike, even after quiet starts.

The wildcard picks? Wilco Kelderman, Andrea Vendrame, Georg Steinhauser — all have been active and could double down on their Giro ambitions. Then there’s the savvy old guard: David Gaudu, Nairo Quintana, Louis Meintjes, Rafał Majka — all past winners, all looking to salvage something from this Giro.

Also lurking are teams hungry for points. Lorenzo Fortunato will try to pad his KOM lead for Astana. Romain Bardet (Team Picnic PostNL) wants to complete his Grand Tour stage win set. He might struggle to get in the move early, but if he bridges late, he’s a huge threat.

GC Stars: To Strike or to Survive?

And what about the big guns? This stage is a trapdoor. Go too early, and you’re hanging in the wind. Wait too long, and the break snatches the day. Riders like Richard Carapaz, Egan Bernal, and Primož Roglič have all launched long-range attacks in Grand Tours. Will they gamble?

Tom Pidcock, meanwhile, is the enigma. Stage 11 is perfect for him: climbs to suit his punch, descending to showcase his daredevil skills. But at 3:41 down on GC, he won’t get leash. For Pidcock to win, the peloton must come back together.

Prediction: Pidcock for Pink Glory?

If the breakaway sticks, Vacek or Plapp are smart bets. But if it comes back together? All eyes on Tom Pidcock. We back the Brit to clinch his maiden Giro win and light up the GC battle. Hold on tight — Stage 11 is about to blow this Giro wide open.
