Esteban Ocon Confirms Free Agent Status as Haas Future Hangs in Balance

Esteban Ocon has confirmed he is weighing his options beyond Haas for the 2027 Formula 1 season, telling reporters he remains “definitely a free agent” while talks with rival teams continue behind the scenes.

The Frenchman’s future has dominated paddock chatter for much of the 2026 campaign. He has been consistently outperformed by teammate Oliver Bearman, a gap that has fueled speculation about whether Haas will retain him past this season.

The American outfit has spent the summer linked to a string of alternative options. Ferrari-backed F2 driver Rafael Camara and McLaren junior Leonardo Fornaroli have both emerged as candidates, with each completing TPC test sessions as the sport’s annual “silly season” grinds toward its conclusion. Teams across the grid are finalizing their 2027 lineups, and Haas appears to be keeping every avenue open.

Speaking to media in Baku ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Ocon acknowledged that key elements of his situation sit outside his control.

“At the moment I’m definitely a free agent for next year,” Ocon said. “There are things in discussion that are out of my control, there are certain topics that are out of my control. So I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes.”

Pressed on whether those discussions extended to other outfits, he confirmed: “Of course, yeah.” Asked directly if a return to Haas remained on the table, his response was brief: “Let’s see.”

Ocon Points to Team Inconsistency Behind Results

Ocon joined Haas from Alpine back in 2025 and has repeatedly pointed to inconsistency between the team’s two cars, rather than his own driving, as the root cause behind a difficult season.

Asked whether that factor was being fairly accounted for in the team’s decision-making process, Ocon didn’t dodge the topic. He admitted the issue had taken a toll on results but stressed the team was confronting it head-on rather than burying the problem.

“Does it matter, really? No, I mean, we are all obviously sad, you know, that this is happening. And this has happened,” he said. “I would say it has cost us, you know, quite a lot this season. But it’s good that we’re on the same page. We’re not hiding from it.”

He added a note of optimism about the path forward, framing the shared awareness within the garage as a foundation for improvement.

“And that’s only going to get us to a better position later this year, because we’re all working to fix it when it happens. So that’s good.”

With Camara and Fornaroli both testing machinery and Bearman’s form continuing to overshadow his own, Ocon’s leverage in these negotiations looks limited. His comments in Baku suggest a driver preparing for every outcome, whether that means a fresh Haas deal or a switch elsewhere on the grid.
