IOC Blocks Vladyslav Heraskevych Over Memorial Helmet Design

12.02.2026, 05:22

The Milan-Cortina Olympic Games have become a focal point for geopolitical tension following the disqualification of Vladyslav Heraskevych. The Ukrainian skeleton athlete intended to compete wearing a helmet featuring the portraits of 24 Ukrainian athletes killed during the Russian invasion. Conflict arose when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) refused to authorize the gear for official competition.

Heraskevych shared images of what he calls the helmet of memory on social media, stating that the ban represents the price of his nation’s dignity. During training sessions held on Monday, the athlete wore the helmet to draw attention to the human cost of the ongoing war. Despite his stance, the IOC maintains that the design violates Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter, which prohibits political, religious, or racial manifestations at Olympic venues.

In the helmet are represented the athletes who died during the war, or to be more precise, only a small fraction of them. It is unfair, and these people should not have left us so young. With this I want to pay tribute to these people and their families. The world needs to know the true price of Ukrainian freedom.

IOC Officials Intervene at Eugenio Monti Track

Reports indicate that Kirsty Coventry, representing the IOC, considered visiting the Eugenio Monti facility to personally discuss the matter with the athlete. The governing body attempted to find a middle ground by offering Heraskevych the option to wear a black armband as a sign of mourning. This alternative was rejected by the Ukrainian delegation, which views the helmet as a necessary tribute rather than a political statement.

Lyudmila Panchenko, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee, confirmed the organization’s full support for the athlete. The national team insists that Heraskevych should be allowed to compete with his chosen equipment, describing the delegation as a solid and indestructible unit in this matter.

The IOC continues to enforce strict neutrality protocols despite the heavy moral context of the request. Vladyslav Heraskevych remains firm in his decision to prioritize the memory of fallen compatriots over competition compliance.
