04.03.2026, 04:53

The cycling world turns its attention to Tuscany for the 20th edition of Strade Bianche on March 7, 2026. This UCI WorldTour event, often dubbed “Europe’s most southern northern classic,” promises another thrilling spectacle across Italy’s iconic white roads. Riders will face a grueling 201-202 km course, featuring 14 sectors of unpaved gravel and 3,500 meters of climbing. The unique blend of challenging terrain and stunning landscapes makes Strade Bianche one of the most anticipated one-day classics on the calendar. This race is renowned for its unpredictability, where mechanical issues, crashes, and sheer grit often dictate the outcome. Both the men’s and women’s races will unfold simultaneously, adding to the day’s excitement and highlighting the growing prominence of this modern classic. The stakes are high as riders vie for victory in Siena, a city steeped in cycling history.

Strade Bianche 2026 presents a formidable challenge, covering 201-202 km with a significant 3,500 meters of elevation gain. The race’s defining characteristic lies in its 14 gravel sectors, totaling 64 km of unpaved “sterrati.” These white roads vary in length from 600 meters to 11.7 kilometers, demanding exceptional bike handling skills and raw power. The course is designed to create decisive moments. Key features include the Lucignano d’Asso, the longest gravel sector, notorious for punctures, crashes, and early race splits. The Monte Sante Marie sector often acts as a selection point, with its varied gradients and a challenging 10 percent climbing kilometer. As the race progresses, the Colle Pinzuto and Le Tolfe sectors provide the final opportunities for riders to launch attacks and establish gaps. The descent through San Giovanni a Cerreto precedes these critical final gravel sections. The race culminates with a brutal climb up Siena’s Via Santa Caterina, featuring ramps up to a punishing 16 percent gradient, before the finish line in the Piazza del Campo. Tadej Pogačar, the 2025 winner, returns as a strong contender. His previous success on this terrain makes him a rider to watch. The simultaneous running of the men’s and women’s races further elevates the event’s stature, solidifying its place as a true modern Spring Classic.
