How Will the World Cup Play-Offs Work – And Who Can Ireland Get?

16.11.2025, 14:51

Ireland’s dramatic comeback win over Hungary — sealed by Troy Parrott’s 96th-minute strike in Budapest — has pushed the Boys in Green one step closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That late winner didn’t just silence the home crowd; it officially locked Ireland into the March play-offs and kept their North American dream alive.

The road to the finals looks different this cycle. Gone is the traditional two-legged format. Instead, UEFA has introduced a streamlined, high-pressure, single-elimination play-off system — where one bad night can end everything, but one heroic performance can change history.

The New Play-Off Format Explained

Sixteen European teams will compete for just four World Cup spots. The contenders include the 12 runners-up from the qualifying groups and four additional teams who booked their place through the Nations League rankings.

The draw, which takes place on Thursday, November 20 at 12pm Irish time, will divide the 16 nations into four separate paths. Each path contains four teams, and only the winner of each path will qualify for the World Cup. Simple on paper — anything but simple in reality.

Every team must survive two knockout matches in March: a semi-final followed by a final. Both rounds are single-leg fixtures, with the draw determining who hosts the semi-finals. This matters — home advantage in a one-off tie can be massive.

How the Seeding Works

The 16 nations will be placed into four pots. Pot One through Pot Three are based on FIFA world rankings, while Pot Four is exclusively for teams entering via the Nations League route. Ireland’s current ranking of 62 is expected to shift after their recent performances, but as things stand, they look set for Pot Two or Pot Three.

Confirmed group runners-up so far include Ireland, Albania, and the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, the Nations League has already secured places for Northern Ireland, Romania, and Sweden, with one more side still to be finalised.

Who Could Ireland Draw?

With several groups still undecided, the potential field is strong — and stacked with European heavyweights. Among the teams likely to enter the play-offs are:

Ukraine, Turkey, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina or Austria, Italy, North Macedonia or Wales, Denmark or Scotland, Kosovo, and Germany or Slovakia.

On current projections, the expected Pot One sides include Italy, Turkey, Poland, and Ukraine. That increases the probability of Ireland landing in Pot Two or Pot Three, which could set up a tricky semi-final away from home.

Key Dates

The semi-finals will be played on March 26, with the decisive play-off finals scheduled for March 31. By then, every team will know their path — and the four European qualifiers will be confirmed.

The full list of 16 play-off teams will be locked in once the remaining World Cup qualifying fixtures conclude. Until then, Ireland can enjoy the momentum — and start preparing for the most important two-match run the squad has faced in years.
