Fletcher Steps Up in a Week of Chaos
Amid the chaos at Old Trafford, Darren Fletcher has emerged as a standout figure. The former Manchester United and Scotland midfielder stepped up from his role as under-18s coach to take charge of the first team for matches against Burnley and Brighton after Ruben Amorim‘s departure. Fletcher, known for his calm demeanor, insists he hasn’t looked beyond the immediate task, but his impact hasn’t gone unnoticed by the club’s leadership.
This isn’t the first time Fletcher has made a lasting impression. When he returned to Manchester United in October 2020, his influence was immediate. By January 2021, he had joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team coaching staff, bringing what Solskjaer described as a “winning mentality, commitment, and hard work.”
“I was surprised I got offered the two games because I wasn’t expecting it,” Fletcher admitted. “I don’t think like that. I think about the job that I’ve got in hand, so it wasn’t something that was on my radar at all. But I know that I can do it and I’m comfortable doing it.”
A Journey from Player to Coach
Fletcher’s journey at Old Trafford has been anything but linear. After retiring as a player, he took on coaching roles, starting with the under-16s before Solskjaer brought him into the first-team setup. His work ethic and thirst for knowledge quickly set him apart, embodying the “DNA” United had long sought.
A story from his early days as a coach highlights his influence. Before a match at Liverpool, Fletcher entered the directors’ area for the first time. “Everyone just thronged around him,” recalled a source. “He kept the room listening to his stories for 15 minutes.” Humility, a trait often associated with Fletcher, remains a cornerstone of his approach.
Future Ambitions and Youth Development
Despite his recent stint in charge, Fletcher remains focused on his role with the under-18s, where he’s been nurturing young talents like JJ Gabriel and Jim Thwaites. Gabriel, a 15-year-old England youth international, has drawn significant attention, but Fletcher believes it’s too soon for a first-team call-up.
“JJ is a fantastic talent, and I’ve enjoyed working with him immensely,” Fletcher said. “There’s a lot of noise around him, and deservedly so because he’s a really talented kid who works hard and loves his football. But his time will come in due course.”
Fletcher’s own future remains open. While he’s prepared himself for management, he’s content to wait for the right opportunity or to continue shaping the next generation of Manchester United players.
“If the opportunity comes one day, I know I’ll be ready,” he said. “If it doesn’t, I’ll be more than comfortable staying as the under-18s coach.”
