Bournemouth have confirmed the signing of Portugal international centre-back Antonio Silva from Benfica, with reports placing the fee at around £26 million ($35 million).

The 22-year-old arrives to fill the gap left by Marcos Senesi, who departed for Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. Silva brings substantial pedigree to the Cherries’ backline, having made 235 appearances for Benfica across all competitions. He was named the Portuguese Primeira Liga’s defender of the year after helping Benfica claim the title in 2022-23, and earned a winners’ medal with Portugal at the Nations League last year.

“Despite being only 22, he has already built an outstanding level of experience at one of Europe’s biggest clubs,” said Tiago Pinto, Bournemouth’s president of football operations.

Bournemouth are preparing for their first-ever European campaign after securing a Europa League berth last season. They open their Premier League schedule against Manchester City on August 23.
