Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has welcomed the timely return of several key players from injury as the reigning champions prepare to push on multiple fronts during the decisive second half of the season.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Guardiola admitted that while he would prefer City to be comfortably clear at the top of the Premier League table, he remains satisfied with their current position just two points behind leaders Arsenal.

City travel to Nottingham Forest on Saturday knowing that momentum, rather than dominance, has defined their campaign so far. But with crucial fixtures piling up across domestic and European competitions, Guardiola believes his side are exactly where they need to be.
“I’d prefer to be 10 points clear of everyone, but it is what it is,” Guardiola said. “Arsenal are doing really well, but we are there. We’re still in the end of December.”
City Still Alive on All Fronts
Despite trailing Arsenal in the league, City remain firmly in contention across competitions. In the Champions League, Guardiola’s side sit fourth and are well placed for a top-eight finish, which would secure direct qualification to the round of 16.
Domestically, City are also through to the semi-finals of the League Cup and will soon begin their FA Cup campaign — a familiar landscape for a team built to peak late rather than dominate early.
“The Champions League, we are up there, and the Premier League we are there,” Guardiola added. “Semi-finals of the League Cup, the FA Cup starts soon.”
Rodri Boost Could Be Season-Defining
Perhaps the biggest boost comes in midfield. Rodri, sidelined since early November with a hamstring injury, is edging closer to a return and could feature against Forest.
“Rodri is much, much better,” Guardiola confirmed. “Available or not, we’ll decide today.”
The Spaniard’s importance to City’s control, tempo, and defensive structure is well documented. His return could be pivotal as the margins tighten in the title race.
There is also optimism surrounding the recoveries of Jeremy Doku and John Stones, although Guardiola confirmed neither is ready just yet.
“Doku and John still aren’t there, but soon they’ll be back,” he said.
Game by Game, Title by Title
For Guardiola, the message remains consistent: patience, rhythm, and squad depth will decide everything. With key players returning and City still within striking distance on every front, the champions appear poised rather than pressured.
“Some important players are coming back,” Guardiola concluded. “So let’s see, step by step, game by game, what’s going to happen.”
