Former Manchester United Captain Details Permanent Physical Toll
Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has disclosed the severe long-term consequences of his professional career, admitting that chronic back issues occasionally leave him dependent on a wheelchair. The 47-year-old former England defender spent years playing through pain to secure 14 major trophies, including six Premier League titles.
“I’ve had a bad back for a long time. I’ve got injuries that I had from my career… I was on tablets and injections for six years to play games. That’s affected me. I get some bad moments of back pain where I have to be in a hospital for a couple of days or in a wheelchair for a couple of days. It’s mad, but it just comes out of nowhere.”
Adopting a Holistic Recovery Strategy
Now residing in Dubai, Ferdinand has shifted his focus toward injury prevention rather than reactive treatment. He is working with a physiotherapist and a personal trainer to manage his physical state through manipulations and coordinated training. He noted that while it took him until age 47 to fully understand his body’s requirements, the goal is now to maintain mobility through a holistic approach.
Despite these physical hurdles, Ferdinand maintains a rigorous work ethic to set an example for his children. He emphasizes the importance of his family seeing him and his wife, Kate, staying active. He believes his children need to witness his drive firsthand, viewing himself as a grafter and a hustler who refuses to let past injuries dictate his productivity.

Life Beyond the Punditry Chair
Relocating to the Middle East represented a significant break from a life previously dictated by the football fixture list. After a successful stint as a pundit, Ferdinand recently departed TNT Sports to prioritize his own media ventures and business interests. This includes his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents, where he focuses on the technical and lifestyle aspects of professional sports that linear TV often overlooks.
Ferdinand remains active through his Rio Ferdinand Foundation, which has supported underprivileged youth for 15 years.
