A Stage Set in Architectural History
Though he never saw a bicycle, 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio might have admired its elegant simplicity. Just like his timeless buildings in Vicenza—functional yet aesthetically refined—the bicycle blends form and function seamlessly. Vicenza, the heart of Palladio’s vision, becomes today’s battleground in stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia.
Monte Berico, the hilltop stage finish, offers not only a panoramic view of Palladio’s works but also a story of faith and folklore. In the 1420s, a vision inspired the building of the sanctuary still standing atop the climb. Centuries later, it’s the final test for riders in this year’s Giro.

When the Giro last ascended Monte Berico in 2015, it was Philippe Gilbert who triumphed—launching early and storming past Tanel Kangert to take a solo win. That finale, with its sharp 10% gradient over the last 750 metres, is punishing enough to shake up the GC—even if subtly.
While the initial 250 metres rise gently at 2%, the punishing final section demands precision, timing, and raw power. Puncheurs and attentive GC riders alike must stay sharp.

Tactical Forecast: Puncheurs vs GC Players
Stage 13’s outcome hinges on whether the breakaway succeeds or the peloton reels them in before Monte Berico. If it comes down to the final climb, expect the following names to feature:
- Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek): A perfect finisher for this terrain. Backed by a strong team and already with three stage wins, Ciccone looks primed to claim Trek’s fifth.
- Wout van Aert (Team Visma-Lease a Bike): Versatile and tenacious, especially on sharp climbs—his win on the strade bianche stage proves his chops.
- Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team): Part GC contender, part puncheur. His consistency on rolling finishes makes him a real danger.
- Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe): Always explosive on short, steep climbs.
- Isaac del Toro & Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates-XRG): The GC leaders both pack a punch—literally—and could contest the win if it comes to a GC showdown.
Dark Horses and Breakaway Threats
Should a breakaway succeed, riders like David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), who has bested Van Aert in a sprint finish before, could surprise. Other outside bets include:
- Paul Magnier & Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quick-Step)
- Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain-Victorious)
- Andrea Vendrame & Dorian Godon (Decathlon AG2R)
- Orluis Aular (Movistar Team)
Prediction: Who Will Conquer Monte Berico?
With climbing legs honed and timing down to an art, our pick is Giulio Ciccone to seal the deal for Lidl-Trek. Expect a ferocious surge in the final 500 metres as he aims to outkick the GC threats and take his team’s fifth stage of this year’s Giro.
