Chelsea, Arsenal, and Everton Chase Rangers Defender Emmanuel Fernandez
Chelsea, Arsenal, and Everton are competing for Emmanuel Fernandez, the Rangers defender who has impressed during his first season in Scotland.
The 24-year-old Nigerian joined Rangers from Peterborough United last summer and has delivered a breakthrough campaign. Fernandez scored five goals and maintained 10 clean sheets across all competitions while helping his side mount a title charge. Rangers currently sit one point behind table-topper Hearts with five matches remaining.
According to TEAMtalk, Fernandez has begun attracting substantial interest ahead of the summer transfer window following his displays at Ibrox Stadium. Chelsea are showing keen interest and could launch a concrete approach in coming months. West Ham United and Everton remain active in the race, while Arsenal are currently the frontrunners after monitoring his development closely.
European clubs have also entered the picture. Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Club Brugge, Ajax Amsterdam, and Feyenoord have all expressed interest in acquiring Fernandez’s services.
Financial Demands and Contract Status
Rangers hold a powerful negotiating position. Fernandez’s contract extends until 2029, and the Scottish club could demand up to £35 million if forced to sell. Peterborough retain a sell-on clause from his previous transfer, further complicating the deal structure.
Premier League Defensive Options
Chelsea possess multiple defensive options but face fitness concerns with several players while others have failed to prove themselves at the Premier League level. A fresh centre-back addition would strengthen their backline depth.
Arsenal currently field Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, and Cristhian Mosquera at centre-back. Additional coverage comes from Jurrien Timber, Ben White, Riccardo Calafiori, and Piero Hincapié. The Gunners lack urgency to invest further in this position unless departures occur.
Everton operate with James Tarkowski, Jake O’Brien, Jarrad Branthwaite, and Michael Keane as centre-back options. However, Branthwaite has battled persistent hamstring issues, and Keane will depart on a free transfer this summer. This defensive strain gives Everton legitimate motivation to pursue Fernandez.
Standing at 6ft 5in, Fernandez presents the physical profile and technical quality to strengthen either Chelsea or Everton‘s defence. The coming months will determine which club secures his signature as competition intensifies across England and Europe.
