Chelsea have struck a verbal agreement with Aston Villa to sign Morgan Rogers in a deal worth £117m, with the England international set to undergo his medical at Stamford Bridge on Monday, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. Personal terms have been agreed on a six-year contract running until 2031, with an option for a seventh season.
Arsenal failed in their pursuit of the Aston Villa star, with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso proving the decisive factor in convincing Rogers to choose Stamford Bridge. Ornstein confirmed on Saturday evening that Villa had accepted the £117m bid. The fee ranks among the largest ever paid for a player in British football, reflecting both Rogers’s outstanding recent form and the premium attached to England internationals in the domestic market.
How Chelsea Secured Rogers Ahead of Arsenal
Chelsea’s interest in Rogers was not a recent development. The club had monitored the 23-year-old for a significant period and intensified conversations this summer after another exceptional campaign for Villa.
According to The Athletic, the sporting project presented by Chelsea, and specifically Alonso’s involvement, proved decisive. The manager had made no secret of his belief in young, technically versatile players, and Rogers identified the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach as an ideal environment in which to keep developing.
Arsenal’s pursuit was serious and sustained, but could not match what Chelsea offered in terms of a clear path to a starting role. At the Emirates Stadium, Rogers would have faced considerable competition for minutes. At Stamford Bridge, he arrives with the expectation of a leading role from day one.
Rogers’s Rapid Rise to the Top
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for around £15m. He extended his contract to 2030 in November 2024 before producing the most productive season of his career: 14 goals and 12 assists across 55 appearances in 2025-26.
He was instrumental in Villa’s Europa League title and their Champions League qualification, accumulating 31 goals and 29 assists across 125 appearances for the club.
His ascent also opened the door to England recognition. Rogers made his senior international debut in November 2024, featured in all six of England’s World Cup matches, and started against both Panama in the group stage and Argentina in the semi-final, where he provided the assist for Anthony Gordon’s opening goal.
