Aston Villa are targeting 24-year-old German goalkeeper Noah Atubolu from SC Freiburg this summer, with the West Midlands club keen to strengthen their goalkeeping options in the current transfer window.
According to Sky Sport Deutschland, Aston Villa face direct competition from Bournemouth for Atubolu’s signature. Both Premier League clubs are in active talks to secure the shot-stopper, who is widely expected to depart the Bundesliga side before the window closes. The report describes a move to the Premier League as the “most likely scenario” for the player.
Who Is Noah Atubolu?
Atubolu is a product of Freiburg’s footballing ecosystem, having come through the academies at Sportfreunde Eintracht Freiburg and Freiburger FC before graduating from SC Freiburg’s youth division. He has since cemented himself as one of the Bundesliga’s reliable goalkeepers, accumulating 125 appearances for the club, keeping 38 clean sheets, and conceding 182 goals. With just 12 months remaining on his contract, his long-term future at Freiburg is uncertain, and that situation has attracted serious interest from clubs across Europe’s top leagues.

The Case for Atubolu at Villa Park
Tottenham Hotspur have maintained an interest in Atubolu for some time. Aston Villa’s need, though, is pressing. Emiliano Martinez’s future at the club is increasingly uncertain given persistent links to Juventus, with recent reports suggesting the Argentine international is likely to move to Turin in the coming weeks.
With Marco Bizot serving as deputy, Unai Emery will require a proven first-choice goalkeeper if Martinez departs. Atubolu has emerged as a viable candidate alongside other names on Villa’s shortlist, including Orlando Gill.
SC Freiburg’s asking price has not been disclosed, but Atubolu’s contract situation limits the club’s leverage and should keep the fee at a reasonable level. Villa’s pursuit is far from straightforward, as Serie A clubs have also been linked with the goalkeeper in recent weeks.
