Aston Villa Secure Spot in Last 16
Aston Villa have already booked their place in the Europa League last 16, thanks to a 1-0 away win against Fenerbahce. Unai Emery’s side now have 18 points from seven matches, allowing them to rest players for their final group game against RB Salzburg.
“The Europa League is important for us and we have got in the top eight and this is the most important now of course,” said Emery.
Lyon are also on 18 points but sit atop the table due to a superior goal difference. Only these two teams have guaranteed their spots in the last 16, with 17 teams still vying for the remaining six positions.
Nottingham Forest and Celtic in Play-Off Contention
Nottingham Forest suffered a 1-0 defeat to Braga, a result that almost confirms their place in the play-offs. While mathematically they can still finish eighth, they would need to beat Ferencvaros and hope the eight sides above them drop points.
Celtic, currently in 24th place, drew 2-2 with Bologna after being reduced to 10 men. A win against Utrecht in their final match would secure their spot in the play-offs.
“We’ve given ourselves a chance – that’s all, a chance – of qualifying and from that viewpoint, I’m delighted,” said Celtic manager Martin O’Neil.
Rangers Eliminated Despite First Win
Rangers secured their first win of the league phase, beating Ludogorets 1-0, but they remain eliminated after picking up just one point from their opening six games. They will face Porto in their final match, with Porto aiming to finish in the top eight.
