Mykhaylo Mudryk is set to rejoin Chelsea‘s pre-season tour in Hong Kong, with Xabi Alonso calling him up to the squad effective immediately after his suspension came to an end.
Alonso made the announcement this week following the Football Association and the World Anti-Doping Agency reaching a settlement that lifted Mudryk’s ban. Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Sunday morning that the winger has already boarded a flight to Hong Kong to make himself available to the squad.
“Mykhaylo Mudryk, flying today to Hong Kong to join Chelsea squad and make himself available for Xabi Alonso with immediate effect.”
Mudryk tested positive for meldonium (also known as Mildronate) in late 2024 and was placed under provisional suspension. He has not featured in a competitive match since November 2024, making this reunion with his club a significant step toward his return to competitive football.
The news comes off the back of a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in Sydney on Saturday, where Richarlison scored with the last kick of the game to hand Alonso a disappointing result as he continues to shape his squad. Chelsea have been using the tour to assess young prospects and experiment with personnel on the other side of the world.
Mudryk, signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in an £89M deal in January 2023, could prove to be a useful option for Alonso heading into the new campaign. His immediate role is expected to be that of a squad player as he works to rebuild his match fitness.
