Visma Squad at 2025 Vuelta a España: Jonas Vingegaard in the Lead

18.08.2025, 09:30

Team Visma | Lease a Bike have confirmed a high-calibre eight-man roster for the 2025 Vuelta a España, with Danish sensation Jonas Vingegaard leading the charge. Fresh off his commanding win at the Giro d’Italia and a determined runner-up finish at the Tour de France, the 28-year-old Dane now turns his focus to the red jersey as Visma sets its sights on another Grand Tour conquest.

“The overall win is our big goal,” declared Head of Racing Grischa Niermann, laying bare the team’s ambitions ahead of Saturday’s Grand Départ in Turin. “Jonas is our leader and our biggest chance for the overall victory. But with Sepp, we have a former winner at the start, and Matteo has recovered well after the Tour. Together with Wilco, Ben, Victor, Dylan, and Axel, we have a team that can support Jonas in every situation.”

Depth, Versatility, and Grand Tour Pedigree

The squad supporting Vingegaard is anything but secondary. Sepp Kuss, the 2023 Vuelta champion, returns to familiar terrain with memories of his unexpected yet inspiring triumph two years ago. Matteo Jorgenson, fresh off a standout Tour and double Paris–Nice title, adds tactical flexibility and punchy climbing legs to the mix.

Veteran Wilco Kelderman provides experience and engine room depth for the mountains, while Ben Tulett, a rising British all-rounder, and Victor Campenaerts, the Belgian time trial powerhouse, bring multi-stage stamina and critical support for transitional stages. Classics expert Dylan van Baarle and French puncheur Axel Zingle complete a lineup designed for versatility and relentless pace-setting.

A Route Made for Drama

The 2025 Vuelta serves up a classic Spanish script: ten hilly stages, five summit finishes, and the brutal back-end double punch of the Alto de l’Angliru and Bola del Mundo. Two time trials — including a critical Stage 18 test against the clock — make this a Grand Tour that rewards both explosive climbing legs and measured consistency.

For Vingegaard, this race offers more than a shot at silverware. “I rode my first Grand Tour here in 2020, which we won with Primož Roglič,” he reflected. “In 2023, we stood together on the final podium in Madrid. Hopefully, we can add some more great memories this year. I’m here for the overall win, and with this team supporting me, that seems like a realistic goal. I’m ready and would prefer to start racing right away.”

The Road to Madrid

With momentum from the Giro, tactical resilience from the Tour, and a handpicked squad built around one of the most complete riders in the peloton, Team Visma | Lease a Bike arrives in Spain as one of the outright favourites. Yet in the Vuelta — where chaos often trumps calculation — ambition must be met with flawless execution.

As the countdown to the opening stage narrows, one thing is clear: Vingegaard and his teammates aren’t just here to compete. They’re here to win.
