Presidents Cup Format Explained: 30 Points and What a 15-15 Tie Means

This is where plenty of previews get it wrong, so be clear on it. All 30 matches are worth one point apiece, there are no playoffs, and a match level after 18 holes is halved. The first team to 15.5 points wins the Cup. If the competition finishes 15-15 after singles, it is declared a tie and the two teams share the Presidents Cup — the trophy is not retained by the holder, which is the Ryder Cup rule and a different animal entirely. That provision traces back to 2003, when the Tiger Woods–Ernie Els playoff was abandoned in darkness.

The week breaks down into 18 team matches and 12 singles: five four-ball on Thursday, five foursomes on Friday, four and four on Saturday, then everybody out on Sunday.

Snedeker’s most interesting call was his last one. Koivun, 21, won in his third career start on Tour and arrives as a Presidents Cup debutant alongside Gotterup and Bridgeman. He is the second-youngest American in the event’s history, behind only Jordan Spieth in 2013.

Ogilvy went the other way, leaning on familiarity where he could. Si Woo Kim, making his fourth appearance, is the only International player inside the world’s top 20, and three of the six picks — Echavarría, Hisatsune and Taylor — have never played the event.
