Stage Overview: Flatlands Favor the Fastmen

The peloton enters a transitional phase as the GC battle takes a backseat — at least until stage 15. Set in the Po Valley, a region steeped in industrial history and densely populated landscapes, stage 12 provides a fast, flat path between Modena and Viadana — a textbook opportunity for the sprinters.
Modena, the city of roaring engines and operatic brilliance, gives this stage a grand start. Known for being the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari and opera icon Luciano Pavarotti, it’s a fitting launchpad for a stage full of high-speed potential.

The riders head out south-west before swinging north into Lombardy. They’ll first pass the Viadana finish line after 145km, before completing a 26.6km circuit back to the line. It’s a sprinter’s dream — flat, clean, and made for speed.
But the early part of the day might stir up trouble. Two Category 3 climbs — Baiso (5.1km at 5.7%) and Borsea — pepper the first half of the route, offering puncheurs and breakaway artists a window to escape. Yet, the final 70km are arrow-straight and pan flat — giving organized sprint teams every incentive to bring it all back together.
Who to Watch: Sprinters Set for Redemption
With five stages since the last bunch sprint, expect the fastmen to be chomping at the bit. Here are the key names to watch:
- Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek): Already a triple stage winner, and firm maglia ciclamino leader. The most dominant sprinter so far.
- Casper van Uden (Team Picnic PostNL): Stage 4 winner hoping for another textbook leadout from his team.
- Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck): Fresh from a win in Napoli and peaking at the right time.
- Olav Kooij (Team Visma-Lease a Bike): Still chasing a win but backed by a confident squad.
- Sam Bennett (Decathlon AG2R): Desperate to put his team on the scoreboard in this Giro.
Wildcards? Watch out for Orluis Aular, Corbin Strong, Maikel Zijlaard, and a stealthy move from Ben Turner. Youngster Paul Magnier might also find his rhythm in the latter stages of the race.
Prediction: Groves to Go Again
Our money is on Kaden Groves — the Aussie sprinter has looked sharper with each stage and seems poised to grab his second victory. But in a Giro full of surprises, don’t discount a photo finish or a rogue breakaway turning the script upside down.
