Giro d’Italia 2025 Stage 1 Odds & Preview

08.05.2025, 08:13

Stage 1 of the 108th Giro d’Italia isn’t wasting time. We’re going straight in—164 kilometers on the menu, just over 2,000 meters of elevation gain, and a kicker of a finale that will immediately test the GC outsiders and reward the most versatile sprinters in the pack.

Route Overview: Two Trips Up Sorl and a Fast Finish

We’re looking at a double serving of the Sorl climb late in the day. It’s a Category 3 ascent, roughly 5 km at 5.4%, but that stat sheet hides a nasty opening—the first kilometer averages 8%. That’s where things can split. Riders with punch in their legs might try something. But here’s the catch: after the second time over Sorl, it’s about 12 km of downhill chaos into the finish.

And let me tell you—it’s not your usual flat sprint. The final kilometer includes a descent past the flamme rouge and a sharp 90-degree left-hander with 500 meters to go. If you’re not in the top 5 wheels there, you can wave goodbye to your pink jersey dreams.

Tactical Picture: Who Controls the Day?

Expect teams with fast men that can survive a climb or two to keep it on a leash. That means Alpecin-Deceuninck, Lidl-Trek, and Tudor will be all-in. I’m also watching Trek-Falese BikeExchange—they’ve got riders who can win from a reduced bunch but also teams good enough to ride tempo and close down attacks.

Make no mistake, some attackers will try to force the issue on the second Sorl climb. But I just don’t see them staying away, not with this kind of peloton.

Key Riders: Our Watchlist

Let’s go through the key names and what kind of scenario suits them.

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) – 3.00 odds via CampeonBet – The bookies’ favorite and ours too. This finale suits him down to the ground. He climbs well, sprints better, and the downhill run-in allows him to save energy before the final kick.

Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) – 5.20 odds via CampeonBet – If he survives that second Sorl ascent close enough, he’ll be the man to watch in the sprint. He’ll have strong support to control things.

Wout van Aert (Team Visma) – 7.00 odds via CampeonBet – Our heart pick. We called this stage for him pre-race, and we’re sticking to it—even if the Belgian press is reporting he’s under the weather with a viral infection. Still, if he’s even at 90%, he can’t be written off.

Corbin Strong (Israel–Premier Tech) – 26.00 odds via CampeonBet – Tailor-made for stages like this. If things get gritty over the final climb and the group’s reduced, he could win it.

Lamperti (Soudal–Quick-Step) & Magnier – Soudal has two potential cards to play. If the pace up the climb is brutal, they’ll go with the one still there at the front.

Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) – If the racing is aggressive, he’s got the all-round profile to stick in the front group and maybe even launch a flyer from the top of Sorl. Very curious to see how they play him.

Max Kanter (Uno-X) & Fiorelli (Green Project–Bardiani) – These guys thrive in this kind of messy sprint scenario where the lead-out trains get disorganized after the descent.

Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon–AG2R) & David Dekker (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) – If it gets scrappy or tactical, Decathlon in particular has riders like Bennett and Gourdon who could cover all scenarios.

Palmer Tudor – Wildcard mention. Don’t be shocked if he does something unpredictable. These are the kind of stages where guys like him make headlines.

Groves and Van Aert follow close behind.

Final Call: Our Podium Prediction

Here’s how We see Stage 1 wrapping up:

  • 🥇 Mads Pedersen
  • 🥈 Kaden Groves
  • 🥉 Corbin Strong

Pink for Pedersen, Groves to confirm top form, and Strong sneaking onto the podium after a nervy finale. Van Aert? He’s still a threat. But those reports of illness make me cautious. Let’s see how he looks out there.

Final Thoughts

Stage 1 of the Giro rarely gives us fireworks. But this time? We can expect a firecracker of an opener.

Two climbs. Fast descent. Tight final corner. We’re in for a proper positioning battle and a sprint royale between the strongest of the versatile fast men.
