Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has spent 13 months away from the ring, and he returns to a very different super middleweight division. The Mexican icon challenges unbeaten WBC champion Christian Mbilli on Saturday, October 31, in Riyadh. The fight is a 12-round contest at the 168lb limit, headlining a DAZN pay-per-view card billed as “Mexico vs. The World.” For Canelo, a win would put him back among the title holders. A loss to a younger, harder-hitting champion would be his second in a row and raise serious questions about how long he keeps fighting. Here is everything you need to know about Canelo vs Mbilli, including the odds, the fight card, start times and the security situation hanging over fight week.
Canelo vs Mbilli Date, Start Time and Ring Walks
The main event takes place at The Venue in Riyadh, the same arena where Canelo previously boxed in Riyadh, earning a unanimous points win over William Scull. The published running order has preliminary coverage starting at 10:15 a.m. ET / 7:15 a.m. PT / 2:15 p.m. GMT.
- Date: Saturday, October 31, 2026
- Prelims: 10:15am ET / 7:15am PT / 2:15pm GMT
- DAZN PPV main card: expected to begin at 6pm GMT (11am PT / 1pm CT / 2pm ET)
- Canelo vs Mbilli ring walks: around 10pm GMT (3pm PT / 5pm CT / 6pm ET)
- Fight week: a news conference on Oct. 29 and a ceremonial weigh-in on Oct. 30
All timings are approximate and could change, especially given the circumstances around the event.
Is Canelo vs Mbilli Still Happening? The Riyadh Security Situation
The fight is going ahead under unusual conditions. Recent missile and drone attacks on Riyadh, including strikes on King Khalid International Airport that killed at least 13 people, have led to the postponement of other sporting events in the city. On October 21, the U.S. ordered non-emergency government staff to leave Saudi Arabia.
Organizers have not budged. Turki Alalshikh insists “[Canelo] fears nothing”, and Mbilli’s promoter is “very confident the fight goes ahead”. Both fighters are now in Riyadh, although fighters were routed through an alternative airport and DAZN is likely to present the broadcast from London.
Canelo Alvarez’s Comeback: What the Crawford Loss Changed
Terence Crawford outpointed Canelo in September 2025, ending his second reign as undisputed super middleweight champion. Elbow surgery followed, and when Crawford retired, Canelo took the quickest route back to a world title.
At 36, he is 63-3-2 (39 KOs) and has never been knocked out. His last five fights, however, all went the full 12 rounds. He remains very hard to beat but is no longer the finisher he once was.
Christian Mbilli: The Unbeaten WBC Champion Built for Pressure
The Cameroon-born, Montreal-based Christian Mbilli is 29-0-1 (24 KOs) with an 83% knockout rate. He won the WBC interim belt with a first-round TKO of Maciej Sulecki and was elevated to full champion after Crawford retired. His only blemish is a split draw with Lester Martinez in one of 2025’s best fights.
Saturday is his first title defense and his first Riyadh Season headliner, and he isn’t short on belief: “Canelo is very old right now,” he told The Ring.
Canelo vs Mbilli Tale of the Tape

The numbers show the main tension in this fight. Canelo has 389 more professional rounds than Mbilli, and his experience at championship level is far greater. Mbilli is five years younger, has a slight edge in height and a 2-inch reach advantage, and his punching power shows in his record. His last five fights averaged just 5.6 rounds.
Recent Form: Canelo and Mbilli’s Last Five Fights
Canelo Alvarez (4-1 in last five):
- L Terence Crawford, UD, September 13, 2025, Las Vegas
- W William Scull, UD, May 3, 2025, Riyadh
- W Edgar Berlanga, UD, September 14, 2024, Las Vegas
- W Jaime Munguia, UD, May 4, 2024, Las Vegas
- W Jermell Charlo, UD, September 30, 2023, Las Vegas
Christian Mbilli (unbeaten, 3 stoppages in last five):
- D Lester Martinez, SD, September 13, 2025, Las Vegas
- W Maciej Sulecki, TKO 1, June 27, 2025, Quebec City
- W Sergiy Derevyanchenko, UD, August 17, 2024, Quebec City
- W Mark Heffron, KO 1, May 25, 2024, Shawinigan
- W Rohan Murdock, TKO 6, January 13, 2024, Quebec City
The comparison is clear. Canelo wins by controlling rounds and managing the fight, while Mbilli tends to overwhelm opponents early. Mbilli’s points win over Derevyanchenko, a durable veteran who has troubled elite fighters, shows he can also win over the distance when he can’t get a stoppage.
Canelo vs Mbilli Prediction: 3 Factors That Decide the Fight
1. Can Canelo Handle Mbilli’s Early Pressure?
Mbilli’s style is to come forward from the opening bell and keep throwing. Sulecki and Heffron were both stopped in the first round. Canelo has usually handled pressure fighters well by blocking with his gloves, rolling under punches and countering to the body. After 13 months out and elbow surgery, though, the first three rounds will show whether he still has the timing and reflexes for that.
2. Who Dictates the Pace in the Middle Rounds?
Against Crawford, Canelo struggled to keep pace with a fast, mobile opponent. Mbilli is not mobile in the way Crawford was, because he walks straight at his opponents. That could suit Canelo, who wants to fight at mid-range where he can land his counters. If Canelo can make Mbilli pay for coming forward, the champion’s work rate could drop off in the second half.
3. Does Mbilli’s Power Carry Against Elite Opposition?
Mbilli’s 83% knockout rate is remarkable, but Canelo has never been knocked out in 68 professional fights. Mbilli has not faced anyone with Canelo’s durability or ring intelligence, and the Martinez draw showed he can be drawn into a long, difficult fight.
The verdict: The odds favor Canelo grinding out a decision, and his history supports that. Mbilli is a live underdog, however, and a strong first half of the fight from the champion would make this very close.

Undercard Storylines to Watch
The Munguia-Zon co-feature has caused controversy over its sanctioning. The WBA ranks Bektemir Melikuziev as Munguia’s mandatory challenger, and the organization said it had not yet officially approved the fight between Munguia and Zon in the weeks before the event. Munguia (46-2, 35 KOs) won the title in Las Vegas in May with a victory over Armando Resendiz, while Zon will be fighting outside his home country for the first time.
At featherweight, unbeaten Rafael Espinoza (28-0, 24 KOs) now faces late replacement Ricardo Blandon (21-6, 14 KOs) after original challenger Lorenzo Parra withdrew. The card has also lost a title fight: journalist Dan Rafael reported that Lindolfo Delgado would “probably not” face Arthur Biyarslanov, with Delgado’s team not having made travel plans. Organizers are considering keeping Biyarslanov on the card against a replacement opponent.

What’s Next: Canelo’s Legacy and Mbilli’s Big Opportunity
Saturday will settle more than a WBC belt. A convincing Canelo win would show that the Crawford fight was a loss to an all-time great rather than the start of his decline, and it would put him back at the center of the super middleweight division. A Mbilli win would make him the new face of 168lbs, at the expense of one of the sport’s defining stars. Munguia is also on the card defending his own belt, so the winner of the main event may already be looking at a big title fight for 2027.
