Spurs Divided: Is Frank's Future Secure After Dortmund Win?

Thomas Frank’s Future Hangs in the Balance

15:00Finished20.01.2026

Speaking to Tottenham fans ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund, it was clear that support for Thomas Frank had all but vanished. A fourth consecutive loss seemed inevitable, and with it, the end of his tenure as manager. But football, as ever, had other plans.

A 2-0 victory, courtesy of first-half goals from Christian Romero and Dominic Solanke, has given Frank a lifeline. The performance, though far from perfect, offered glimpses of what could be a team fighting for its manager, a dressing room still united.

Fans Remain Skeptical

The boos that echoed around Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the late defeat to West Ham were still fresh in the memory. Before kick-off against Dortmund, Frank’s name was met with jeers. Yet, by full-time, the mood had shifted cheers replaced the earlier disdain as Spurs secured a vital win, putting them on the brink of automatic qualification for the Champions League knockout stage.

But was this a turning point or merely a temporary reprieve?

Sarah Sturgeon-Scraggs, a lifelong Spurs fan, was blunt in her assessment: “I really do think 99% of this stadium are Frank out.” Her father, Ronnie, echoed the sentiment, insisting that without an immediate miracle in performance and results, Frank’s position was untenable.

Even after the win, their stance didn’t waver. “The first half was really enjoyable,” Sarah admitted, “but the second half shows why Frank is not the right person for this team.” The shift to a more defensive setup in the second half frustrated many, draining the energy from the performance.

Ali Speechly, another long-time supporter, shared the frustration: “If we could see signs of what he is trying to achieve, we might have more patience. It looks like a bunch of players doing what they want.” The inconsistency good first halves followed by lackluster second periods has become a hallmark of Frank’s tenure.

A Glimmer of Hope?

Not all fans were dismissive. Alfie, who had previously criticized the team’s “Championship-level” performances, found reason for optimism: “The first half was brilliant. The second half wasn’t great, but we didn’t concede. I think Frank might have a lot more up his sleeve than we think.”

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson noted the players’ commitment: “What I saw tonight was not a performance where the manager had lost the dressing room. That was a group of players that played for their manager.” Frank himself emphasized this unity in his post-match press conference: “The players are giving everything. That is an extremely good sign about the culture.”

Two Faces of Tottenham

This season has been a tale of two Tottenhams. In the Premier League, they sit 14th, struggling for form and identity. Yet in Europe, they’ve lost just once in seven games, thriving under the bright lights of the Champions League.

Ally McCoist summed it up on TNT Sports: “There’s two Tottenhams running about this season. Fortunately, it was the one that’s been doing well in the Champions League who turned up tonight.”

Robinson added: “When your back’s against the wall, you dig in and get a result. The thing that will frustrate Thomas Frank and these Tottenham fans is where was this in the Premier League?”

The Road Ahead

There’s little time to dwell on the Dortmund win. The pressure resumes this weekend when Spurs face struggling Burnley in the Premier League. Another strong performance could shift the narrative. A loss, however, would reignite the calls for Frank’s dismissal.

Frank is under no illusions: “The big thing is to build on this with a performance and win against Burnley on Saturday. It is a big skill to produce in the Premier League and Champions League every week. We just need to keep doing the same thing, keep believing, and things will turn.”

After a tumultuous week fan backlash, media scrutiny, and reports of the club’s hierarchy considering his future Frank allowed himself a moment of relief: “Two big glasses of red will be necessary. I will enjoy them.”
