Manchester City climbed to the top of the Premier League table ahead of Arsenal’s evening kick-off, delivering a commanding 3-0 victory over West Ham United that extended their unbeaten head-to-head league run to 20 matches (W17, D3).
Fresh from securing their place in the EFL Cup semi-finals with a sixth consecutive win in all competitions, Pep Guardiola’s side arrived for their final fixture before Christmas brimming with confidence — and it showed almost immediately.
The breakthrough arrived early when the in-form Phil Foden picked out Erling Haaland inside the box. Alphonse Areola initially denied the Norwegian with a strong left-foot save, but the rebound fell kindly and Haaland reacted quickest, prodding home with his right to give City a deserved lead.
City were relentless throughout the first half, pinning West Ham deep in their own half and dominating possession. Haaland could have doubled his tally before the break, but mistimed a header when well placed.
The pressure eventually told again after Tijjani Reijnders saw one effort blocked. Moments later, the Dutch midfielder made no mistake, lifting a composed finish high into the net following another slick City move to make it 2-0.
That goal underlined a first half that was almost exclusively played in West Ham territory, with the visitors offering little resistance and audible frustration ringing out from the travelling support as the half-time whistle blew.
Any faint hopes of a response after the interval were short-lived. Jarrod Bowen dragged a promising counter-attack wide early in the second half, but it proved to be little more than a fleeting moment of threat.
After a brief lull in clear-cut chances, City put the result beyond doubt in the 69th minute. Haaland was once again in the right place at the right time, sweeping home a loose ball inside the area to register his 19th Premier League goal of the season.

Crysencio Summerville forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a near-post save shortly afterwards, but by then the contest was effectively over. Nuno Espírito Santo’s quadruple substitution did little to alter the momentum or the inevitable outcome.
Haaland went close to completing his hat-trick in stoppage time, but the missed opportunity did little to dampen City’s afternoon. The win extends their remarkable unbeaten run against teams starting the day in the relegation zone to 47 matches (W43, D4).
For West Ham, the defeat means they remain in the drop zone for Christmas — the fifth time they have found themselves in that position. Encouragingly for Hammers supporters, they avoided relegation on each of the previous two occasions, offering renewed hope for the 18th-placed side as the season progresses.
