Marseille have made a direct approach to West Ham United over a potential summer move for Jean-Clair Todibo, with the Ligue 1 club working to bring the French defender back to his homeland.
According to Sky Sports, Marseille contacted West Ham regarding the 26-year-old, with discussions continuing over the conditions required to complete a deal. Todibo’s future has grown uncertain following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship, and a departure before the transfer window closes is now a real possibility. Signed from OGC Nice for €39 million last summer, Todibo largely struggled to impress in a poor Hammers side.
Marseille Pursue Loan Structure for Todibo
Reports from Foot Mercato via GFFN indicate Marseille are primarily targeting a loan move due to their current financial limitations. A central point in negotiations concerns Todibo’s salary and how much of his wages Marseille would be prepared to cover during a proposed loan spell.
The French defender is reportedly open to the move and willing to make a financial contribution himself to help the clubs reach an agreement. Todibo has prior Ligue 1 experience following an impressive stint with Nice before joining West Ham. A return to France could give him the platform to re-establish himself at the top level following the Hammers’ drop into the second tier.
His omission from the matchday squads in West Ham’s fixtures against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup and Burnley in the Championship adds further weight to the likelihood of a departure.

Marseille Must Clear Squad Space First
Marseille are not yet in a position to finalise Todibo’s arrival. The club are focused on trimming their squad and pushing through several outgoing transfers, moves considered necessary before any new additions can be sanctioned ahead of the Ligue 1 campaign.
That dynamic makes the structure of any deal with West Ham significant. A loan arrangement would give Marseille far greater financial flexibility than a permanent transfer, and talks are progressing with Todibo’s willingness to facilitate the move working in everyone’s favour.
At 26, Todibo should be approaching his best years. His familiarity with French football reduces the risk for Marseille, and a loan limits their financial exposure, particularly if West Ham agree to share wage costs. The player’s motivation is clear. Marseille must now generate enough squad room to convert their initial approach into a signed agreement, though they will face competition from Juventus and Inter Milan, both of whom have been linked with the defender.
