Ronaldo’s Ban Reduced to One Match, Cleared for Portugal’s World Cup Opener

25.11.2025, 12:00

Portugal have been handed a major boost ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup:  Cristiano Ronaldo will be eligible for the team’s opening match after FIFA reduced his initial three-match suspension to just one, placing the remaining two under a one-year probation period.

The decision, revealed through documentation accessed by Lusa, stems from Ronaldo’s straight red card in the 2–0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland on 13 November during the European qualifiers. It was a historic and unexpected moment — the first sending-off in his 226-match international career.

How the Ban Was Reduced

Ronaldo served the mandatory first match of his suspension immediately, missing Portugal’s emphatic 9–1 win over Armenia in Porto — a result that sealed the nation’s ninth appearance, and seventh consecutive qualification, at football’s biggest stage.

What followed was a meticulously prepared appeal from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), led personally by president Pedro Proença. Their argument centred on three key pillars: the hostile pre-match climate, the nature of the incident itself, and Ronaldo’s spotless disciplinary record across two decades of international football.

According to FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, comments from Ireland’s coach Heimir Hallgrímsson — who accused Ronaldo of influencing refereeing decisions in the reverse fixture in October — created “a clearly and demonstrably hostile environment” around the Portuguese captain. The FPF also emphasised that Ronaldo had been repeatedly held inside the penalty area throughout the match, with his 61st-minute elbow on defender Dara O’Shea described as an act of visible frustration rather than violent intent. VAR intervention led Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg to show a straight red.

Crucially, the federation highlighted Ronaldo’s exemplary career-long conduct: more than 200 international matches without a single dismissal. This clean slate ultimately played a decisive role in convincing FIFA to suspend two of the three matches.

A One-Year Probation Period

Under FIFA’s ruling, the final two games of the suspension are now conditional. Should Ronaldo commit a similar offence during the next 12 months, the remaining matches will be activated immediately in Portugal’s subsequent official fixtures — with the potential for additional sanctions depending on the severity of any new incident. The committee also imposed a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs (around €5,400).

The outcome ensures that Portugal’s record appearance-holder (226) and all-time top scorer (143) will lead the national team into the expanded 48-team World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada between 11 June and 19 July 2026.

What Comes Next for Portugal

The World Cup draw is set for 5 December in Washington, where Portugal will learn their group-stage opponents. With qualification already secured, Roberto Martínez’s squad will now turn their attention to preparation matches scheduled for the March and June international windows, with opponents and venues still to be announced.

For Portugal, having Ronaldo available from matchday one is more than symbolic — it’s a strategic advantage. At 40, he remains a leader, a goalscoring threat, and a galvanising presence for a squad aiming to peak on North American soil next summer.
