The Miami Heat briefly made headlines for the wrong reason on Tuesday after a link titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference,” scheduled for July 27, appeared on the team’s YouTube channel before being deleted. A team spokesperson clarified to multiple outlets that the post was an accident — the social media department had prepared the stream in advance as a contingency and published it prematurely.
The slip came on the same morning that Rich Paul, Klutch Sports CEO and James’ longtime agent, appeared on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” to urge restraint from the public. “Just have a little patience with him,” Paul said. “Obviously, it’s his choice. … This is a very important choice for him, and you cannot rush it. I think he’s earned the right to not be rushed.” Paul reiterated the same position on his podcast “Game Over” with Max Kellerman the night before: “We’re not going to be rushed. It’s his choice to make, and when he makes the choice, he’ll make it.”
James spent four seasons in Miami from 2010 to 2014, arriving after his first seven NBA years with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. He announced that move during a notorious hour-long ESPN special, declaring he would take his talents to South Beach. Alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, he reached four consecutive NBA Finals, won two championships, averaged 26.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game, claimed back-to-back MVP awards in 2012 and 2013, and earned First Team All-NBA recognition in each of those four seasons.
Now 41 and an unrestricted free agent, James is coming off his eighth and final season with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he posted 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game. He announced his departure from Los Angeles on June 30.
Miami is considered among the finalists for his services, joined by the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and others. Should James choose the Heat again, he would join a roster that now includes two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo.
