Graham Potter Transforms Sweden From Qualifying Basement to World Cup Finals

Sweden will compete in the World Cup this summer after Viktor Gyokeres scored a dramatic 88th-minute winner against Poland in the playoff final. The victory capped a stunning turnaround for a team that had won just one of its opening six qualifying matches under previous management.

When Graham Potter arrived as interim head coach in November, Sweden sat at the bottom of their group with two points from six games. Two defeats to Kosovo and a draw-and-loss record during his temporary stint suggested the role was toxic. Yet the organization appointed him permanent coach before the playoff series—a decision that proved prescient within weeks.

The playoff pathway began with Gyokeres‘ hat-trick in a 3-1 semi-final victory over Ukraine in Valencia. That performance, while dominant, meant nothing without overcoming Poland at home. Anthony Elanga and Gustaf Lagerbielke twice put Blagult ahead before Gyokeres’ scrappy finish in the 88th minute sent Sweden to their 13th World Cup appearance.

Potter’s Formula: Environment Over Resources

Potter deflected personal credit after the match, instead emphasizing atmosphere. Captain Victor Lindelof and other squad members had noted the difference in the camp environment under the former West Ham, Chelsea, and Swansea manager.

“The players have been very responsive. We have shown what we can do as a team against a very good Poland. Most things in football are determined by how much money you have. But if you can create the right environment and work together correctly, it can go a long way,” Potter said.

Sweden qualified despite an extended injury list that worsened during this window. Potter described the squad as injured “in more ways than one”—both physically and mentally—yet they cleared the final obstacle.

From Rock-Bottom to Recognition

Potter reflected on the psychological journey from despair to vindication. “When the results go against you, you see how football can change, life changes. You think you’ve hit rock-bottom. It’s darkness. It wasn’t long ago that the team was heavily criticised. That’s part of the job. Now the support from the crowd was huge. We weren’t perfect, but as a team we were outstanding.”

The moment Gyokeres’ goal crossed the line left Potter stunned. “I looked towards the goal and suddenly the whole bench ran onto the pitch and I thought, ‘Am I here?’ It was like an out-of-body experience. A moment you were grateful to be part of.”

World Cup Fixtures Ahead

Sweden will face a demanding Group F schedule. They begin against Tunisia in Guadalajara on 14th June, then meet three-time finalists the Netherlands in Houston on 20th June, before concluding group play in Arlington against Japan on 25th June.

This represents Potter’s second Swedish miracle. He previously guided Ostersunds from the lower tiers into the Europa League. Now in his adopted country—where his children were born—Potter takes the national team to a major tournament after months of crisis management.

“It’s for the World Cup, and I’m very happy for the players! It’s hard to let it sink in. I’m so grateful,” Potter said. Follow TipsGG for complete coverage of Sweden’s World Cup campaign.
