Damian Lillard is doubling down on his roots in a major way this offseason. Just days after being officially reintroduced by the Portland Trail Blazers, the NBA veteran has announced his next move he’s taking over as general manager of the Weber State basketball program.
The news came directly from Ogden, Utah, where Lillard hosted the sixth annual Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic. Speaking at the event, he emphasized the importance of his bond with the program and his desire to support its future growth.
“My relationship with Coach Duft and this program means a lot to me. I want to help the team succeed and guide players beyond college. That’s something I’m truly passionate about,”
– Lillard shared during the event.
For those who’ve followed Lillard’s journey, this move is a full-circle moment. He starred for Weber State from 2008–2012, averaging 24.5 points in his senior year and earning his second Big Sky Player of the Year award. His No. 1 jersey now hangs in retirement, and he was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.

Now 35, Lillard is navigating a pivotal career transition. After a ruptured Achilles in the playoffs against Indiana, he is not expected to return to NBA action for the 2025–26 season. Though still under contract with the Milwaukee Bucks who owe him $113 million after his recent waiver he signed a short-term deal to serve in a hybrid role with Portland during recovery.
But his new role at Weber State is far from symbolic. According to a university statement, Lillard will collaborate closely with the coaching staff and athletic department, offering strategic guidance and mentorship based on his elite-level experience.
“College athletics is constantly evolving. Building a winning culture takes time and commitment. I believe in this program and what it represents. I’m excited to play a more hands-on role in shaping its future,”
– Lillard noted in a press release.
This appointment signals a deeper evolution in Lillard’s career from star athlete to strategic leader. Whether it’s on the hardwood or behind the scenes, the man known for his clutch gene is ready to elevate Weber State from the front office. It’s not just a return it’s a rebirth.
