Golden State Shifts Focus with Porzingis Acquisition
The Golden State Warriors have finalized a trade with the Atlanta Hawks, sending Kristaps Porzingis to San Francisco. In return, Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield will head to Atlanta.
This move signals a clear shift in the Warriors’ strategyone that puts an end to their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo. According to league sources, Golden State had submitted multiple offers to the Milwaukee Bucks, but the belief solidified in the last 24 hours that Giannis would not be traded before the NBA Trade Deadline.
“The Warriors’ pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo is over. If there was a trade in which Draymond Green would have been involved, it would have been the one for Giannis.”

The statement underscores how far the Warriors were willing to go before pivoting once the stalemate with Milwaukee became evident.
Kuminga’s Five-Year Chapter Closes
Jonathan Kuminga leaves Golden State after five seasons marked by high expectations, growth, and setbacks. The move to Atlanta offers him a fresh start away from the championship pressure of the Warriors.
Buddy Hield is also part of the deal a necessary sacrifice to acquire a player the Warriors have long monitored.
Why Porzingis Fits the Warriors
The Warriors have had Kristaps Porzingis on their radar for some time, particularly after his playoff runs with the Boston Celtics. His ability to protect the rim and space the floor with three-point shooting addresses a long-standing need for Golden State.
The pairing of Porzingis and Draymond Green is seen as complementary. After evaluating multiple options, the Warriors chose to retain Green despite his name circulating in trade talks.
Contractually, Porzingis arrives on an expiring $30.7 million deal, providing the Warriors with future flexibility.
Health Concerns Loom
The biggest question mark surrounding Porzingis is his availability. He has played just 17 games this season with the Hawks, following 42 appearances in 82 games last season with Boston. A combination of physical issues and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome has limited his time on the court.
He hasn’t played since January 7, but the Warriors remain confident in getting him back soon for the final stretch of the regular season.
