Stephen Curry’s future with the Golden State Warriors remains a talking point across the NBA, driven largely by the franchise’s failure to meaningfully upgrade a roster that finished four games below .500 last season.
The Boston Celtics have surfaced as a hypothetical destination should Curry ever push for a trade, with at least one concrete package already being floated publicly. The Athletic’s Nick Friedell, who covers the Warriors closely, addressed that speculation directly — and he finds it difficult to picture Curry requesting a move.
Friedell Addresses the Trade Chatter
Friedell acknowledged that the league is watching closely to see whether Curry’s patience has limits.
“Now, a few months later, with little improvement to the roster, the league wonders whether Curry’s mindset will change. Speculation continues from both fans and the media that Curry may become so frustrated that he eventually asks out during the final year or two of his career.”
Despite that external noise, Friedell pointed to Curry’s consistent track record of publicly backing the organization and his connection to the Bay Area.
“But that’s still hard to envision given that he has been so consistent in both his messaging about wanting to stay with the Warriors and in expressing his love for the Bay Area.”
Friedell also noted, citing an anonymous team source, that Curry is not operating in the dark regarding Golden State’s front office strategy.
“It’s not like Curry isn’t aware of what Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy and the rest of the front office are trying to accomplish. The conversation between the star and the team has been ongoing — for years.”
The Proposed Celtics Trade Package
Sports Illustrated Celtics beat writer John Karalis constructed a hypothetical deal that would send Curry to Boston. The structure he proposed:

“My trade package is going to be George, the picks acquired from Philadelphia, and Sam Hauser for Curry. The picks are valuable for a team resetting itself. I think Boston might try to get away with keeping one, maybe giving up one of their own so they can keep the 2031 unprotected Sixers pick. But ultimately, I’m cool with giving up both.”
Karalis argued that the draft capital represents fair value for the final years of a Hall of Fame career.
“The 2028 pick, as convoluted as it is, is valuable, and getting two potentially high lottery picks in exchange for the final few years of Curry is a really good return. George is in it for salary matching, and Hauser’s inclusion helps give them someone currently valuable so they’re not tanking too hard in this new lottery reform era. Also, including Hauser allows Boston to stay under the tax.”
Karalis also suggested that Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens would not hesitate to make a call if Golden State signaled any openness to a deal.
“There’s no doubt Brad Stevens has already been on the phone with the Warriors brass to pitch a deal if they want one.”
That statement reads as Karalis’ own inference rather than a confirmed report of formal discussions between the two franchises.
Curry’s Career Standing and Recent Production
Curry has spent all 17 seasons of his NBA career in Golden State, winning four championships, two regular-season MVP awards, and the 2022 NBA Finals MVP. At 38, he remained one of the most productive players in the league during the 2025-26 season, averaging 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.1 steals across 43 appearances. He shot 46.8% from the field, 39.3% from three, and 92.3% from the free-throw line while connecting on 4.4 threes per game.

Those numbers make any trade discussion more complex — and for Golden State, more painful to consider. Friedell’s reporting points toward a player who remains informed, engaged with the front office’s long-term direction, and publicly committed to the organization. The outside speculation about a late-career move persists, but there is no credible indication it reflects Curry’s own thinking.
