UEFA Investigates Declan Rice Over Arsenal Champions League Comments
Declan Rice faces potential Champions League suspension after UEFA opened an investigation into his post-match remarks following Arsenal‘s 1-1 semi-final first-leg draw with Atletico Madrid. The England midfielder questioned referee Danny Makkelie‘s decisions in the Madrid clash, specifically suggesting home supporters influenced the official’s judgment.
The contentious match featured three penalty-kick reviews. Arsenal received a spot-kick for David Hancko‘s foul on Viktor Gyokeres, while Atletico earned their own penalty for Ben White‘s handball. A third incident a foul on Eberechi Eze in the box initially appeared to be another penalty until Makkelie reversed his decision after 13 replay reviews.
Rice’s Controversial Statement
Speaking after the match, Rice alleged the crowd swayed the referee’s judgment on Eze‘s challenge. He stated:
“The second one, Ebs’ one, it’s a clear penalty. I don’t know how that’s not been given. I think the fans provoked the decision and changed the ref’s mind. But it doesn’t matter, we move on to next week and we want to beat them at home.”
Rice added commentary on White‘s handball incident, noting the difference between UEFA enforcement and Premier League standards:
“I’ve not seen it back yet. At first glance I thought that maybe if it’s in the Premier League it doesn’t get given because it’s so low to the ground. The ball’s not going on target. But then UEFA matches are totally different rules hands away from the body. I think with UEFA they give it but Premier League, I’m not so sure.”
UEFA’s Investigation Process
UEFA will examine referee Makkelie‘s official report to determine whether Rice‘s comments questioned the official’s integrity. According to reporting, a ban remains possible. The midfielder faced a two-match suspension during his West Ham tenure after accusing a referee of corruption a process that required approximately five weeks to resolve.
Rice further elaborated on his concerns regarding UEFA competition standards, claiming referees operate with heightened sensitivity:
“It’s just the way it’s operated, I think. I feel like they penalise you more in European competitions. I’ve felt that since I played in the Champions League three years ago. Referees are really quick to make decisions, to blow their whistle. You can’t do much about it. You’ve just got to watch out and be careful.”
Arsenal face Fulham in the Premier League this weekend before hosting Atletico Madrid in the semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium. The outcome of UEFA‘s investigation could impact team selection for the crucial return fixture.
