The Denver Nuggets have reshaped their lineup this offseason, and it appears Russell Westbrook won’t be part of their plans moving forward. The 36-year-old veteran guard spent the 2024–25 NBA season on a veteran minimum deal with Denver, averaging a respectable 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals over 75 regular-season games. Despite his efforts, the Nuggets fell short in the Western Conference semifinals, losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder ironically, Westbrook’s original NBA team.
Following the playoff exit, Westbrook declined his player option for the 2025–26 campaign, signaling his desire for a new opportunity potentially with a team that gives him a legitimate shot at the elusive championship. With his next move possibly marking the fourth team in four seasons, the future Hall-of-Famer is reportedly considering a shift to the Eastern Conference.
Knicks Emerge as a Contender
According to NBA analyst Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report, the New York Knicks could be a serious contender for Westbrook’s signature. Despite signing Jordan Clarkson in free agency, the Knicks are reportedly still in the market for another backcourt presence and Westbrook’s aggressive rim-driving style could fill a key void off the bench.

“The New York Knicks addressed a lack of depth in the backcourt by adding the recently bought out Jordan Clarkson,” Bailey wrote. “But they were reportedly interested in Russ in July, and he could still provide a boost to the team’s playmaking particularly in lineups with shooting from Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby.”
If signed, Westbrook would likely anchor the Knicks’ second unit alongside Clarkson and Miles McBride, offering energy, leadership, and experience in high-pressure playoff moments. At age 37, his role would be more focused and limited, but his veteran presence could be invaluable for a Knicks squad aiming to go deeper than last season’s Eastern Conference finals run.
Still in the Hunt for a Ring
The Knicks are clearly in win-now mode, and adding Westbrook could bolster their chances in a wide-open East. While New York has also been linked with Landry Shamet and Ben Simmons, Westbrook’s pedigree and proven track record make him an intriguing fit. His ability to attack the basket and create offense could be a perfect complement to the Knicks’ perimeter shooting core.
For basketball bettors and Knicks fans alike, this potential move is worth monitoring closely as the 2025–26 season approaches. Westbrook might not be the explosive force he once was, but he still brings intensity and a chip on his shoulder two assets any title-hunting team would value.
