Rooney Criticizes Chelsea’s Team Rotation
Wayne Rooney has called on Chelsea’s senior players to challenge manager Enzo Maresca over his frequent team rotations. The former Manchester United captain expressed concerns about the impact of constant lineup changes on player morale and performance.
Maresca made seven changes to his starting XI for the 2-2 draw against Qarabag in the Champions League, marking the fifth consecutive match with at least seven changes.
“The players want to play, they want to build relationships. When you keep chopping and changing then the players won’t be happy. I think that will come back to bite them.”
Rooney believes the responsibility falls on experienced players like Reece James to address the issue with Maresca. He emphasized that this is not about “player power” but about ensuring consistency and team cohesion.
“I think most clubs now have a leadership group and as a group you have to go and question the manager.”

Chelsea has made 85 changes in 16 matches this season, the most of any Premier League team. Maresca defended his rotation policy, citing the need to rest key players like Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Malo Gusto.
“The intention was to rest Moises, Enzo, Malo and more players. They are not able to play every three days.”
Rooney Reflects on Van Dijk Comments
In a separate segment, Rooney acknowledged that he may have been “a bit harsh” in his criticism of Virgil van Dijk‘s performances this season. The Liverpool captain had previously described Rooney’s comments as “lazy.”
Rooney, however, stood by his assessment of Van Dijk’s performances, stating that the Dutch defender would be the first to admit they haven’t met his usual high standards.
“From a performance point of view I think I was speaking what I felt and what I was seeing and I felt I was right.”
