What was shaping up as a routine regular-season NBA matchup between the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans took a sharp turn on Saturday night, as tensions boiled over into a full-blown on-court altercation.
The incident occurred midway through the third quarter when Suns center Mark Williams attempted to establish position for a screen, with Phoenix guard Collin Gillespie looking to navigate around him. Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado aggressively tried to clear space, using both hands to move Williams out of the way, a move that drew an immediate foul call.
Alvarado took exception to the whistle and quickly escalated the situation. After a brief exchange of words, he stepped directly into Williams’ face following a slight shove from the Suns big man. The confrontation turned physical within seconds, with Alvarado landing a right hook as the two players became entangled.
Williams absorbed several blows during the melee before players from both benches rushed in to separate the pair and restore order. Officials acted decisively, ejecting both Alvarado and Williams from the contest.
Despite the disruption, Phoenix maintained its composure and closed out a 123–114 victory, improving to 18–13 on the season. Williams finished with 10 points and eight rebounds in just 11 minutes of action before his ejection. Devin Booker led the Suns offensively, scoring 20 points on 6-of-18 shooting.
The loss dropped New Orleans to a disappointing 8–25 record. Alvarado exited with seven points and two steals in 14 minutes, while Trey Murphy III carried the offensive load with 24 points on an efficient 6-of-12 shooting, knocking down six three-pointers. Rookie Derik Queen added 21 points in the losing effort.
Phoenix will remain on the road, heading to Washington to face the Wizards on Monday night. Meanwhile, the Pelicans return home, where they will look to regroup against the New York Knicks in their next outing.
