Marc-André ter Stegen’s long association with Barcelona appears to be nearing a decisive turning point, with reports claiming the German goalkeeper is set to join fellow La Liga side Girona on loan until the end of the season.
The 33-year-old has been a cornerstone of Barcelona’s success over the past decade, making 423 appearances in all competitions since arriving from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014. However, his standing at the Camp Nou has weakened significantly following an injury-hit spell and a clear shift in goalkeeping hierarchy under new head coach Hansi Flick.
Injury Struggles and Loss of First-Choice Status
Ter Stegen underwent back surgery during the summer and has managed just one senior appearance since returning to fitness. That outing came in December’s Copa del Rey clash against CD Guadalajara, where he kept a clean sheet in a 2–0 victory.
Despite being fully available in recent weeks, the German has remained an unused substitute in six matches across all competitions, with Flick showing complete trust in new No.1 goalkeeper Joan Garcia. The lack of minutes has inevitably fuelled speculation about Ter Stegen’s future.
Regular Football Key Ahead of World Cup Cycle
A move away from Barcelona has increasingly been viewed as essential for Ter Stegen, particularly with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann recently admitted he expects a transfer to materialise, stressing that consistent club football will be crucial for Ter Stegen’s role with the national team.
Several clubs had been monitoring the situation, with Besiktas reportedly tabling an approach late last year. Galatasaray, Chelsea and Manchester United were also credited with interest, though none progressed talks beyond the exploratory stage.
Girona Move Agreed as Romano Confirms ‘Here We Go’
Girona have now emerged as the clear frontrunners. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement has been reached between the two clubs for a loan move until the end of the season — with the journalist delivering his trademark ‘here we go’ confirmation.
Crucially, Ter Stegen has already given his approval for the move, clearing the final hurdle ahead of official confirmation.
Girona manager Míchel recently spoke openly about his admiration for the goalkeeper, stating: “I’d love to have ter Stegen with us. He’s a top goalkeeper. Every club wants Marc in their team.”
Competition for the No.1 Shirt at Girona
If completed, Ter Stegen would become Girona’s second signing of the January window following the arrival of 20-year-old forward Claudio Echeverri on loan from Manchester City.
The German international is expected to compete with Paulo Gazzaniga and Dominik Livaković for the starting role, as Girona look to stabilise their campaign. Currently sitting 11th in La Liga, the Catalan side are only five points clear of the relegation zone and see Ter Stegen’s experience as a potential difference-maker.
End of an Era, or a Temporary Reset?
While the move is technically a loan, it could signal the beginning of the end for Ter Stegen’s Barcelona chapter. With Flick firmly backing Garcia and the club reshaping its squad, this spell at Girona may determine whether the German has a long-term future at the Camp Nou — or whether a permanent exit awaits in the summer.
For now, all signs point to a short-term solution that offers Ter Stegen what he needs most: minutes, momentum, and relevance at the highest level.
