Manchester United are reportedly plotting a move in the January transfer market despite their ongoing managerial uncertainty, with a potential swoop lined up for a striker Arsenal have been monitoring for more than a year.
According to The Sun, United are now considering a move for Blackburn Rovers youngster Igor Tyjon, with the 17-year-old expected to be on the move before the window closes.

Arsenal have tracked Tyjon since the summer of 2024 and saw multiple bids worth over £1 million rejected by Blackburn. However, the January window has significantly altered the situation for all parties involved.
Tyjon is approaching the end of his scholarship at Ewood Park and has already turned down the opportunity to sign professional terms with the Championship club. Blackburn are now resigned to losing the teenage striker, with January representing their final chance to secure a development fee.
If Rovers fail to sanction a deal this month, they would only be entitled to compensation in the summer when Tyjon becomes free to sign elsewhere — a scenario that strengthens the hand of interested clubs.
The forward has already gained senior experience, making three first-team appearances during the 2024/25 season, including two Championship outings and an EFL Cup appearance. He has also represented both England and Poland at youth international level, though his development has largely continued within Blackburn’s academy setup.
While Blackburn’s asking price remains unclear, the move would be viewed as a low-cost, high-upside addition for either Manchester United or Arsenal — a deal that highlights the increasingly strategic nature of January business.

Why the move makes sense for United
For United, significant senior recruitment this month appears unlikely. With no permanent manager in place and a long-term rebuild looming, attention is already shifting toward the summer window.
Against that backdrop, investing in elite youth talent represents a calculated, low-risk strategy. Securing Tyjon would strengthen United’s academy pipeline while avoiding major financial commitment during a period of uncertainty.
However, any move for the Blackburn striker could raise questions over the future of Chido Obi. The young forward featured in the senior side last season amid an injury crisis but has struggled for minutes this campaign, creating doubt around his immediate pathway.
Speaking previously about academy development, Ruben Amorim highlighted the broader challenges facing young players at the club.
“Chido is not always a starter in the under-21s,” Amorim said. “All these guys played when a lot of people were saying: ‘Sack the manager’. So you can see that I’m not worried.”
With Amorim’s departure now confirmed, Obi could yet benefit from a reset — though increased competition would follow if Tyjon arrives.
Arsenal’s academy-first future plan
From Arsenal’s perspective, the interest in Tyjon aligns neatly with Andrea Berta’s renewed focus on academy recruitment.
The Gunners have already secured deals for Edwin and Holger Quintero from Independiente del Valle, along with Victor Ozhianvuna from Shamrock Rovers. All three players are 16 and will not officially arrive until 2027, but the moves underline Arsenal’s long-term planning.
At senior level, Arsenal are firmly in win-now mode, having invested heavily in players entering their peak years such as Viktor Gyökeres and Eberechi Eze. While that approach boosts immediate competitiveness, it also reduces future resale value.
With a core group of players likely to peak simultaneously, future-proofing the squad has become essential. Academy prospects such as Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman offer hope, but striker depth in the youth ranks remains limited — particularly with Andre Harriman-Annous already involved in the senior setup.
Adding Tyjon could help address that gap, making this a transfer battle that speaks as much to long-term strategy as it does to short-term market opportunity.
