Manchester United’s midfield revamp under Ruben Amorim may have hit an early stumbling block. Reports from Spain suggest that Valencia are making strong progress in tying down Javi Guerra to a long-term deal — potentially shutting the door on a move to Old Trafford this summer.
Valencia Confident Despite Initial Contract Rejection
Guerra, 22, has been on United’s radar after impressing in back-to-back La Liga campaigns, where he notched seven goals and four assists from midfield. With less than two years left on his current deal, Valencia were initially met with rejection when they approached the Spaniard with a renewal offer.
However, according to Marca, the tide has turned. Negotiations are said to be progressing positively, with Valencia optimistic about finalising an agreement that would see Guerra stay at Mestalla until 2029. The proposed terms reportedly include a threefold wage increase starting in the 2025-26 season, along with incremental rises in the following years.
Not Another Mosquera Situation
Valencia are clearly determined not to repeat the mistake they made with Cristhian Mosquera, who recently joined Arsenal after snubbing a contract extension. But unlike Mosquera, Guerra has not communicated a desire to leave — in fact, sources close to the player suggest his priority is to remain at Mestalla, provided the sporting project matches his ambitions.
Guerra is reportedly seeking more than just a pay bump. He wants firm assurances that Valencia will soon be challenging at the top end of La Liga — not simply surviving season to season.
Man United Monitoring But Yet to Make a Move
Despite clear interest from Amorim’s camp, Manchester United have yet to submit a formal bid. They’ve only made informal inquiries so far, suggesting that they may be waiting to see how the renewal talks unfold before making a move.
Meanwhile, it was AC Milan who tested Valencia’s resolve with a €20 million (£17.5m) offer — comprised of a €16m fixed fee and €4m in add-ons. That bid was swiftly rejected, with no improved proposal from the Rossoneri yet tabled.
Guerra’s Stock on the Rise
Already a regular feature for Valencia, Guerra’s value was further enhanced by his performances for Spain’s U21 side at the recent European Championships. He scored in their quarter-final defeat to England, showcasing his ability to make an impact on the international stage.
With Amorim eager to inject dynamism and technical flair into United’s midfield, Guerra fits the bill. But if Valencia get their way, this one could be over before it really begins.
